and worked on the rest of the wiring.... I need to protect the connections and make it look a little more pro rather then pirate.
 
I have the same setup as you and have struggled with alternators. I found that I need a separate ground strap from the back of the alternator to the engine block. I have the sepentine system from a 92 truck. I also put the resistor in, but I dont think that was the fix.
 
I guess we'll know if the resister fixes it if SBG's alternator burns out again. I can always tow him off the trail. Again.

Kidding. I wonder who pulled out whom the most on the last outing. It was quite exciting. Nothing like powdered ice to run a battery down from winching. My battery is still not back at full volts yet. Need to put a trickle charger on it. My cheap Chinese one scares me too much to use it.
 
the alternator died a couple days after that trip.

ground straps, it's certainly possible, but pretty unlikely since I have multiple ground straps (I've had this trouble before, so since I've been more then a little fastideous about ground straps). For example, every major connection (body, frame, batteries) go to a stainless 3/8" bolt that was welded into place before I did any coatings. The frame has straps to the body (multiple) and straps to the motor (multiple as well) along with a verified ground from the accessories....

and for the record, the only time this has been towed home was when I blew up the motor on the day I took the picture that is my avatar (yes, it was broke where the picture was taken - it did look good sitting there beside the road)
 
I went even further with my grounds. I added a separate ground circuit so I didn't not rely on the body and frame. I have ground wires going to every electrical end point, such as lights. Sucks to be chasing ground issues when lights go out.
 
Dang, and I thought I was OCD.... I've done that type of wiring, on my various boats I've owned - it didn't work out so well. I like one, easy ground or two.... that said, there may or may not be a grounding strip in the box where the computer is.

oh look, corrosion.... wonder why the alternator failed?

I drove this thing for quite awhile before the alternators started failing - it needs a good signal from the battery, of course, corrosion would kill that signal.

I bought a Denali for its 6.0 LS motor and a 1976 Corvette from someone else... the Denali is also for a trip to California at the end of February, but it's actually just parts.
