I made that mistake ONCE and it took me well over an hour if finagling with it to finally get it back into place correctly.

@Moonglow96 you're not completely boned, but you're in for a boatload of irritation trying to pinpoint that one exact spot to get it back in correctly. Just keep your cool and keep messing with it. You'll eventually get it positioned right.

Not once I managed to find the right spot. I always put it in 1st when I park and I had the benefit of already being familiar with what position the stick sits (it's a modified RHD shifter in a LHD rig) when in 1st, so I was able to narrow down the possibilities but it still took me a while.

Thanks again. I have no freaking clue. I backed in, but would normally have put it back in first. I wonder if someone could tell by pics where I should be aiming. Now things have moved in there as I’ve messed with it. That center tooth moved forward, I can get it to move back. I’m not real sure how the mech works tbh and idk if I moved it when I was initially trying to get it in.

I'm assuming you left it in reverse when you parked (at least, hoping that's the case). If that is the case, the point where the shifter bushing (the white nylon cop that fits over the small ball at the very bottom end of the shifter) should rest will be forward and to the left, going from the rig's perspective. It's been a while since I've had my shifter out, but IIRC you should see something of a metal cup that the white bushing will sit inside when it's installed properly.

no cap on this shifter…it’s an 83’ ? So my wife pushed the clutch in (with my permission) while I was fidgeting with it and I moved the right assembly forward, shifter slipped out and now nothing will move around. I’m digging a hole here. Boned. I better stop. Such a dummy, I’ve turned a one 🍺 job into a 🍻 🍻 🍻.

Yeah I'd definitely take a break at this point and collect yourself. Mine is an H55F and doesn't have the ball at the end of the shifter machined down like that, so on mine there's a nylon bushing that goes over it. Looking at that second picture (caveat: I have zero experience with the early H42, assuming that's an H42) it looks like that's the location the shifter should engage to.

I would think disengaging the clutch shouldn't throw everything out of whack any more than just moving the point your shifter engages, but to be fair I didn't have to go that far when I had this issue.

At this point I would hold off until someone more familiar with the H42 can jump in and offer some advice.

It can happen.
See the thread below about a locked up 5 speed transmission. The 4 speed and 5 speed are similar.
When a shift fork inside the transmission moves when the shift lever is out - the shifting mechanism can lock up - until it’s repositioned.

Got it back in. Thanks again for the replies. It was stuck in reverse. Getting the spring button depressed and racking it back down out of reverse was tricky. Had to have the clutch in and use two pry bars like in the thread you shared. That was money.
