My 91 Fj80 wanted to rest today. My wife was driving her and she she heard a clunk and then the engine started to run crappy. She said the whole truck started shaking. When i got there i asked her to move it furthire off the Interstate(Kinda Deadly and stuff). I checked the Dip stick and got some shavings in the oil. Checked the motor mounts and belts all where fine. I have recently found that these puppies come wih a timing gear(Really Cool). What's the chances of ripping that up? Anyone got any sugestions? I was planning on doing a front brake job and knuckle rebuild, looks like I have a whole project now!!! Just wish I had a garage.

You never mentioned the oil level? Coolant level? Those are the two biggies and the most important data points. How long have you had her? Any recent maintenance?

Did you check to see if all the spark plugs are in their holes?

Yes it has a non steel gear, made of I do not know what to drive the cam, the gear on the crank is steel. Still a good set up. A little metal on the dip stick on the oil is not a really good sign, bet lots of metal in the bottom of the pan. sorry to hear of your luck. If you do not do your own work, need to take it to some one. later robbie

So...did you try to start it again? That's also an important data-point (but only after oil level and coolant level is verified).

What kinda clunk?

The good Bad and Ugly

I went out to her today and checked the oil and nothing. It was Real Low, so i added 2 quartes to it and I could not it to start all other fluid where fine. I think maybe the batterty is low so, When i get off of work i will try charging it and turning it over.

I wouldn't start an engine with shavings in the oil without dropping the pans to see what's in them. Admittedly it does not sound good, but still..... Might also cut open the oil filter.

Where are you at in the country with no garage? Heck, if you lived next door I'd offer to help.

I'm in Salisbury NC. Also, I think I have more bad news, towed her home tonight, slaped the charger on it and when I went to crank ......nothing but battery drain. I think it is seized up!! Does anyone know what a Mechanic might charge to do a engine swap on her?I know where I can get a #FE & Trans w/ 45K for about a grand. If I could get it slaped in for about the same I might be able to bring her back to life?

Sorry to hear this happed to your 3FE. I seized a ring in my 1990 FJ62 3FE, tossed the motor, lots of metal in the pan.

$1K for a 3F AND a trany is a great deal especially with only 45K on it. I would jump on that right away. If not you could do as I did and put a short block 2F under the 3FE head. However this is a bit more involved and the average mechanic out there will NOT want to do this, unless he is into Cruisers. Sorry I am a few 1000 miles away, dig around I am sure you can find someone who can swap the motor for $1k if not less. I would think $1k would include all new belts and hoses too. Save your other trany as they are normally $1000’ish by themselves if in good shape.

Good luck with it all!

I figured it wasn't the timing chain or timing gear. If either of them broke, the engine would stop running immediately. The fact that it continued to run afterward, but run crappy, leads me to believe that something might have affected just one (or two) of the cylinders maybe due to oil starvation.

If you pull apart the old motor, I would be curious to know what went wrong.

Sorry to hear about the demise of your motor. I am curious whether in hindsight there were any possible clues it was coming? Was it using or burning oil? Did the plugs all look to be in similar shape last time you pulled them?

BTW, helocat is suggesting a 2F swap under your 3FE head because this would increase your power, but I doubt the gains would be big enough to offset the opportunity of a 45k complete used motor that cheap. Also, are you sure it is 45k or is that maybe a typical wrecker's yard bluff? Based on used motor stocks in Canada, it seems that all vehicles seem to get written off before the motor reaches 100,000km.

Also be careful if the 3fe is out of a 62. There are some differences in the crank. This could effect some things for you. Also the trannies are a little different too. I don't know all the specs but I know enough to know there are differences.

So do you mean the whole truck or just the engine?????

Dino- Sorry for the bad luck, I hope you get it working soon...

Another quality tech post, and this time it was WITHOUT suggesting duct tape.

You guys keep quoting FSIMIG (aka Sparky) which defeats the purpose of having him on my twit filter.

How can so much drivel come from one smarta$$ that is supposed to be finishing high school?
