Hi All:

As some of you may, or may not know, I blew the front pinion shaft in my FJ40 last weekend while 'wheeling.

I've got the donor axle assembly taken apart, now I'm trying to remove the third member from the axle housing.

Normally, when the axle is bolted to the truck it is no problem, simply jack-up the pinion end and the third member section will pop loose from the axle housing.

But, in this case, the axle is sitting on jackstands, so I can't do the above trick. Any suggestions for breaking-loose the chunk from the axle housing?

Thanks!

Alan

Tug the pinion to the side with a comealong hooked on the end of the housing?

Where does the brown solvent and ice cubes fit into this?

put the legs of your cherry picker over the axle tubes, attach the chain to the pinion flange and start pumping.

done.:wrench:

now where's my prize?!

Hi All:

Humm . . . . interesting idea Georg! Have you used this trick successfully? I mean, what is there to keep the axle tub from rotating upwards as the pinion flange is lifted??

Thanks for the suggestion!

Alan

it probably will rotate but the entire third will lift off. i've done something similar. bolted a chain to the pinion flange, lifted the entire assembly off the ground and tapped on the axle housing with a sledge. two taps and it fell.

i just use a puddy knife and a hammer to hit the puddy knife .

takes about 2 minutes , no damage and no pain .

i've tried that too...wasn't so lucky. although it will make the welds on the axle housing much smoother if you hit em

and steve, the kc is long gone;) thank you...it was wonderful

Position the axle on jackstands, pinion pointing straight down, 1" off the floor.
Use a piece of 5/8 bar stock as a punch.
Go in through the fill plug.
Rotate the diff until the punch is pressing on the case, not going into the spider gears.

Whack it, preferably w/ a large brass hammer.
