After living in Costa Rica for three years where car theft is definitely an issue, it got me thinking about the security of my 80. I only carry liability, so I would be screwed if it got stolen. I hate car alarms and don't trust someone to hack up my wiring harness. A while back I read an article about wiring in a hidden rocker switch for.the fuel pump that would render the vehicle undriveable. Anyone done something similar?

I'm sure lots of people have done that.
I suspect the smart ones won't tell 5 Billion people over the Internet...

:)

I had a fuel pump cutoff switch in my bug. It was pretty sweet. I had it wired through the old factory 6 volt stereo that did not work. It was a selector type switch, so I had it going through the volume knob. if the stereo was switched off the the fuel pump wouldnt work, turn on the radio to turn on the car.

You could easily wire it into a phony hazard switch on the dash. I doubt a wouldbe thief would think to hit the hazard switch in order to get the truck started.

I think the majority has done at least one on at least one vehicle.

I've done it on the fuel pump, the ign coil, fuse, etc. Its generally best to decide which you want to do and then research that method. Like e9(4) said its bad form to detail what we did on a forum. Its best to get suggestions on which components are best to use as a kill and then read any one of the 1987698787843 Google pages that describe the process.

Or you can wait for some mudder to take pity and PM you with details JUST in the hopes of avoiding some yayhoo of posting the info publicly.

Obviously, I wasn't asking someone to divulge specific details and jeopardize the security of their rig. Just wanted to know if it was a viable option to an alarm system......one thing I won't have to ask is how to be a pompass ass, that has been demonstrated perfectly......

I wasn't being pompous, it was tongue in cheek. YOU are too damn sensitive. :flamingo:

Kill switch = viable alternative to alarm system

Devices perfectly suited to using as a kill:
• Fuel pump
• Ignition coil
• Fuel pump relay

What you use as a switch
• unused button
• reed switch
• hidden switch
• banana in your tailpipe

Then sit back and watch a few videos:

I have a friend here in Uganda with a 70 series outfitted with a pretty nice system. When the vehicle is started, a 30 second timer is activated. Within that time, you have to press the button which is hidden VERY well on the steering column. If you don't, it kills the engine. The system can be disarmed via a hidden toggle when loaning the car to a friend who might always forget to hit the button or you don't want aware of the system.

He always says if his car is ever stolen, all he has to do is drive 30 seconds in each direction to find it!

Buy an iTouch and add a GPS module to it:

Hard wire it into the vehicle's electric system but just hide it and forget about. Be sure you installed the "Find iPhone" app and have it logged into your iTunes account.

Truck goes missing? Log into the app on your iPhone to laptop and track the vehicle down...with 5-0 or mossberg in tow.

It'd be my luck that they'd pull it into an enclosed trailer and ship it to Uganda.

I tapped into the clutch safety switch on my old SAAB that got parked in some bad spots when I was doing field service for IBM in Atlanta. The system I created was armed by a big yellow button on the dash that read "START" LOLz. The disarm was three switches that had to be thrown in order or else the system would have to be reset by the fake start button again.

A co-worker had a similar setup on her truck. Someone tried to steal it and when they couldn't they decided to f'up the entire dash.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Some pretty ingenious ideas that I would have thought of, that's for sure. I'm not crazy about the thirty second one though. My car in Costa Rica had one, except the alarm beeped until you found the remote switch. Always stressed me out like the car was going to self destruct if I didn't deactivate it soon enough.

You may want to consider disabling the starter circuit instead of other systems like the fuel pump or ignition.

If your anti-theft system fails, you don't want it to disable the vehicle on you in the middle of a busy freeway or something.

No worries! If that happens, I'll be sure to swap over any goodies from it to my truck and send you photos :grinpimp:

Thanks. Photos are always good. :)

I tend to take security a little more serious than others ;)

Apart from a hidden momentary ignition switch bypass that activates a timer relay that only gives you 8 seconds to start (2-handed operation), I also have a multi-camera surveillance system that runs 24/7

And if that's not enough, having the world's LOUDEST car alarm is sure to get attention

I agree with Snake eater :p Security needs to be taken care of at priority, therefore, installing a surveillance security system is must. You could choose an IP camera or a dvr channel system that will look after your car and this way you would be able to track the thief too. I am suggesting this because I myself did this by installing a q-see security sysytem and it has proved to be boon for me as I caught a thief by this way. Moreover, its cheap so don't think that it would cost you much.

One thing more that you could do, I don't remember from where did that thing my elder brother got installed from in the car. He setup a switch near the clutch without pulling it the engine won't start. That's a masterpiece. I'll let you know once I get to know.
