I was wondering at what years and models what kind of seat belts, and at what seat positions were installed from the factory?
How many people do modify the vehicles to equip with more appropriate seat belts? What kind do people installed?

40-series came as Hard Top and Soft Top. Where there any variations on the seat belts for the same years vehicles between variants?
Land Cruiser was also equipped with side benches facing center of the vehicle. I know many were converted to regular forward facing bench by either dealers, shops or owners. How does the seat belt situation works in this case?

I installed 3 point shoulder strap seat belts in mine, with the top bracket welded to my family cage roll bar. Lap belts in a 40 with the doors off isn't as safe as the shoulder belt....

You asked a question that requires about a billion different responses. There are hundreds of different seat belt combinations thru the years ... To list them all would be an undertaking just to answer the simpler more specific question:

... more appropriate seat belts? What kind do people installed?

The appropriate seatbelt is the one that holds you in :)

People run oem belts ... Or aftermarket ...

Or like me I run both in my truck.
I got a set from wesco ... They have some good quality belts

:meh:

Questions ...

Why are you thinking you need more appropriate seatbelts and what are they intended for? Kids? Child seats? Side seats? Foward facing rear bench? New front buckets? Oem seating? What type of seats do you have that your intending to replace?

:)

Not enough questions, need more!

I'm trying to clear an official side of the business. I've heard that many locals got ticketed for not wearing appropriate seat belts as some people treat modern rules to the old vehicles as well. What if you replace the old worn out belts with new aftermarket, then should you install one under new regulations or replicate the original?
I found that by latest rules you have to use at minimum what was originally equipped or retrofit with appropriate. So the question raised what was "factory equiped".
On other hand the "exemption" ruledoes not apply to transport kids, so they have to use restrain system by latest regulations.

In my case, I have 1974 and based on the "half" hinges and loops around the tab, I assumed my 40 came as Soft Top. What was equiped by OEM on mine still a bit of a question for me...
Previous owner converted side facing benches to forward facing bench, but no seat belts were present when I bought the 40. After all seats were worn down I swapped them with BEARD front and PRP rear bench suspension seats. What system should I use now?
My roll cage doesn't have any provisions to install any harnesses and its replicate the original with 2 low sides on the back.

Stock USA you would have had lap belts only front and lap belts only on the side seats ... Hard top it soft ... The same

It depends on the state what safety standards you need to comply with ... I have been pulled over for no seat belts ... Until the officer noticed I had the lap belts and it's a 74' ... He let me go with a smile and a 'cool truck' comment... NYS is what come with it OR better

Wesco has many different styles if belts ...

Pics of your seat setups?

Only time there would be a different between soft top models and hard top models would be between 1/76 and and the end of the 77 model. Factory soft tops were rare after 74. A few 75 owners on Mud but not sure of any later ones.

But a basic list isn't that hard. Mid year 62 lap belts were added to the front seats. 73 model retractable lap belts were added to the new for 73 bucket seats. 1/76 three point seat belts were added with the retractable part and high pivot attached to the hard top. With the 78 model those moved to the roll bar. A couple of other things while a 40/60 is a three person bench seat there were only seat belts for two. Started out being red with eye on the floor and clip on the end of the seat belt. 68 model it was a plate with a hole at the end of the belt that was bolted to the floor. 70 model seat belt changed to black. 79 seat belt changed to grey. No seat belts were used on the long jump seats and lap belts on short jump seats only had non retractable seat belts that matched the color of the front seats belts. This is for the US market which was different in other parts of the world. This is off the top of head and could be different but guessing I'm pretty close.

My '75 came all stock with retractable lap belts in the front and fixed, adjustable lap belts for the jump seats in the back. I installed a rear bench seat and drilled holes in the bed floor and reused the jump seat belts for the rear bench with some added support plates. I'm thinking of grabbing some 3 point seat belts from the salvage yard for the front seats. Looks like I can attach the upper part to the factory roll bar bolts, but I haven't done it yet.

There is also a fixed thread hole on the hard top behind the B pillar that was for three point seat belts. Those started in 73 when I believe at least one country in Europe was requiring three point seat belts. The extra bracket towards the bottom of the hard tops side was only spot welded on markets requiring three point. 78 US market it moved to the roll bar. Countries without roll bars continued on the hard top.

Old thread from the dead but wondering if anyone knows where to buy replacement red belts for 69 FJ40. I have the original fronts but i am missing the rear belts, mounting hardware. Anything I have found online has been black and not OEM style clip.

Someone posted this exact question up the other day. I don't have time to help you look through the threads right now, but someone pointed to an online site that sells red belts (webbing). Not sure on the OEM style clip.

Wondering if anyone knows if 1976 FJ55 lap belts are the same exact seatbelts as stock 1978 FJ40 jump seat lap belts?? They look like they would be but I can’t find any confirmation on this. I’m looking for one last lap belt for my 1978 FJ40 to match the OEM one I found and believe I found one but it’s from a 1976 FJ55. It’s the LAST OEM belt I need to have finally pieced together all stock OEM seatbelts in my truck. Help!!

part numbers are different for 40 and 55's
