help. my 85 fj-60 when driving, the seat belt light comes on (when I'm wearing my seat belt) and the engine starts to buck.
the truck engine either races or stalls out when clutch is depressed.
i have changed plugs, cap and rotor. is this an ignition module problem?? or coil?? need help here..........................

HEY, my '84 60 has done that a few times also. strange

I was just logging on to ask about this same problem. Mine is serious. Every time I drive for an hour and let the car sit for a while (1 hr to 3 hrs) it does this and then the truck just goes nuts. Very erratic about holding an idle. Bucks and jumps. Dies while driving down the road.

Then after 15 or 20 minutes the seatbelt light pops on and off a couple times and she eventually runs fine.

This has happened on every extended trip.

Otherwise the truck runs great.

I was going to have the electrical system checked. Just doesn't make sense that it only happens after a hour of driving.

....?????

By the way, 1984 FJ60 here...

If someone can help, I will be soooooo grateful. I need a super reliable truck driving back roads in the middle of nowhere (no cell service either), with little kids in the car. Around town, I couldn't care less if she breaks down, it is just the pitch black curves on the backroads at night that are problematic.

MJ_Oregon, totaly! same exact scenario! I am afraid to take it in to the dealer to have it looked at in fear they would not be able to duplicate. It happens in the winter months (-20 degrees) and in the summer (+90 degrees) dry and wet conditions. Hopfully someone out there knows what is going on with the trucks.........

actually just got a ticket for not wearing it! i said to myself, why the hell am i getting pulled over? As you know these trucks are not made for speed! seriously, it happens when i do or don't..............

anyone have any ideas?

ha, maybe...............

It is not likely that the two are related, bucking/seatbelt light. The 60 bucking issue comes up quite a bit here, if you use the search you just might find what your looking for.:)

The bucking could be caused by a few things, the first thing that comes to mind is the fuel filter, make sure its good, or better yet get a new one, their cheap. EGR problems come up quite a bit around here to, here is link for troubleshooting the EGR valve. Good Luck!!

I will take a stab in the dark and say electrical. Charging system for one. the seat belt light is to come on if there is a failure if I remember correctly. Back then there was not OBD1 or OBD2 and the dash lights were the alert warning. I think it will be an easy one to find if you get it to the dealer. If Portland area go to Gladstone Toyota and see Paula 503-655-7100 in service and she can get Tim a master Tech or Stafford and he has been there 30 years! To take it for a drive or Diag it. Most it will cost is .5 to 1.0 hour @ $88 an hour.

rebuilt alt...................keep you posted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

check the fusible links at the battery positive as well, had very similar issues recently- erradic voltage issues due to melted platic at the links- much better now, and I second the EGR test as well.

For whatever reason, the seat belt light comes on when the voltage is low or the alt is not charging. A ditto to check all the fusible links, battery terminal connections and even the main negative ground coming off the battery. Keep in mind that every time you go messing around in the electrics you may temporarily remove a short that will come back over time. In other words, don't assume that a new alternator or whatever will fix the problem.

So, did the alternator rebuild cure the problem.

Mine went away for three weeks, but it is back. I am taking the truck to an auto electric specialist for a diagnostic next week.

I know this is an old post but my 1984 FJ60 has the exact same problem. Were there any definitive answers to this problem?
