Scheel-Mann Seat Install

For later model 80’s the seat belt buckle will have to removed from your existing seat. I ordered some hardware that I hope fit the factory shouldered seat belt bolt, apparently these are hard to find M11 1.25 pitch. For now I used some hardened Class 10.9 hardware.

Did you try a 7/16" bolt for fitment?

Thanks. Unfortunately, I did not try any non metric. I researched later that it is very close on another thread (mud has some through members had the comparison to the 1000th iirc) and will use those if the ARP bolts I have already ordered and paid don’t fit.

Did the buckle fit with shouldered factory bolt the way you expected?

The seat belt nut you are looking for is 7/16-20. Hard to believe, but it's true! I just went though this myself.
It has been about a year since I did the Scheelmann install in my 80 series. After reading some of the posts about the thread pitches last night I began to worry that maybe I had screwed something up. Because I surely do not recall having the thread issue complained about. But yea, now I remember it being a pretty common non-metric size. Whew. I did this in two different 80 series with no issue.

Oh man, I went to pick up a part today at g-Werkes in Berkeley today, and sat in all the Scheel-Mann seats in their show room....I could have died in any one of them. Was 3x more comfortable than any of the 10 recaros they had in the showroom. Sorta ruined me...lol

I love my Scheel-Mann Vario XXL!

Hello all. Keeping this thread going. I'm talking to Toby about the Vario Fs for my '91 HZJ73. I'm a little newer to this than most of you. One area I'm curious about is the bracket. I reached out to Planted and they don't have something specific to the 73 bud did remind me that they have the J70 Troopy brackets 1984-1999. Do all the 70 series match up where I could use these brackets? Or does anyone recommend brackets that work for the 73? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

The Troopy brackets won’t work. Do you have factory suspension seats? If not, you are in luck. We just went through this with Planted. You need to call Planted, tell them you want the land cruiser 77 series brackets they just modeled and you need to specify they are for Scheelmann seats. That should work.

Jim,
Thanks for the prompt response. I'm actually engaged with Planted and I will forward this thread to them. No factory suspension seats here. :)

@jmlockwood ,
Confirmed. Planted quickly responded that the 77 set just requires a few extra holes drilled and they are good to go. Thanks again. I'm good on that part and I'm good on my order with Toby. I just need to figure out the slider and then wait for my order to show up. Does this setup require either the flat or tab slider? Or will both work? Question for Toby but I haven't pinged him yet.

Great thread y'all, I'm looking to pick up some of these seats for the new (to me) 100-Series, with the only problem being that I'm 10" taller than my wife. Toby at Scheel-Mann and the folks at Planted didn't have any solutions for height adjustment. They said there are some janky options in the RV world that they couldn't recommend. Anyone try to add some height adjustment to the mix? I'd hate to blow several G's on some fancy seats only to make the truck undriveable for my wife.

How tall is your wife is the question.

Lots of folks have mentioned major height differences between drivers not being an issue. Always a good idea to find someone local to try them out though. Overland Expo east/west are great places to do that.

Back in time I saw @overlandtailor thread-BTW John’s build is among the best I have ever seen-and I took it as a reference. The Schell-Mann seats got my attention in particular
The OEM seats, even after replacing the foam, were giving me low back pain after driving couple of hours. They were OK, sure, but my wife’s GX seats were significantly more comfortable for long trips and fatigue free.
I’m 5-11”, around 185 lbs and, so far (touch wood), in good shape for my mid 60’s mileage. All and all, it would seem however my trusted 80 series is managing the pass of time much better than this old fart. So I decided to eat the bullet.
I talked to Toby at Schell-Mann USA (outstanding customer service and support!) whom after some questions suggested the Vario F as the best option for my needs. Besides the orthopedic seating, I knew I wanted a subdue appearance, a close match to OEM colors and leather to better deal with the stupendous amounts of dog hair we choose to live with (anyone sharing close spaces with a GSD would surely know what I’m talking about)
The entire process of dealing with Schell-Mann, Toby in particular, has been superb: great service, attention to detail, informative and caring.
Last week I finally got the seats (the lead time was strictly respected). The packaging is first-class. The quality and fit and finish of the product is top notch-special mention to the Planted brackets, a true bolt-on. The instructions are clear and concise.
After a few hundred miles and some hours of driving, I must say these seats have surpassed my expectations. Really happy with my decision-my chiropractor would disagree;)
Attaching some pics
Cheers!
