This thread has got to be the most inspiring, life altering, entertaining, thing to happen to any of us in ages.

I must confess I have been away from the thread for a time, spent the last day catching up on the last 10 pages. One of the things I have managed to do in that time away was to take my oldest son on a trip. Just the two of us, leaving behind his mother, brother and sister. He and I loaded into the LX450 with camping gear and drove a few hundred miles to join some old friends camping and wheeling. It was the first time we had gone away just the two of us and it was the most incredible few days.

The reason I post this is that he drove for the first time on that trip. He is 9 years young and the look on his face when I told him to get in the drivers seat and started adjusting the seat was priceless.

I sometimes wrestle with the right way to teach my son things, and your paragraph on Army's driving instruction has summed it up for me. I have saved those words and with your permission will use them to help him out.

As always you, and Army, inspire.

Thank you Lee, I'm looking forward to more.

Brad

P.S. I'm not sure when the Alaska trip is to take place, but I would like to volunteer that I am located in Dawson Creek BC. It would give me great pleasure to be able to give back to you in any way for what you have given me. Anything you need.

I can remember the first time I got to drive. My dad pulled over and put me in his lap and let me steer the rest of the way home. It was a 78 F150 4x4 with a cleveland 351 with burnt out glasspacks. I still love the 78-79 fords to this day.
Now I have a son (9mo) and can't wait till he can drive. Just the other day I had him in my lap and grabed the steering wheel with both hands making vroom noises. Then he reached over and shifted with one hand 1st to 2nd and went back to making vrooom noises. Made me proud and mama cry cause she now now knows he will have the love for cruisers too. He can't get enough of driving his little car around.
I love reading the chapters and can't wait till the next

^ that boy is EXCITED to be in Dad's truck!!!

My 2 year old daughter is the same way. She gets in our 4runner and land cruiser and climbs all over and tries to shift them and steer......my favorite line EVER

"Car ride Daddy...go car ride?" ummmm....YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can remember I was about 3 or 4 and my brother was 5 or 6 and my mom left us in car to run in side for a minute. My brother released the e-brake and we did the whole 200" driveway backwards, my mom was NOT happy when she came out.

That reminds me. My little sister and I would sit in my dads car in the driveway and pretend to drive. He had a new BMW Bavaria and left it at home when he went out of town so nothing would happen to it at the airport parking lot. My sister got home from morning kindergarten and was playing when she took it out of gear and released the emergency brake. As it began rolling backward down the drive she jumped out and watched it run across the street only to be caught on the neighbors house by the still open drivers door. She then proceded into the house and got into bed. She later confessed that when the policeman tried to wake her up, she was only pretending to be asleep because she was afraid he was going to take her to jail. They let her "sleep."

Wow.. I didn't drive by myself until I was about 9 or 10 years old, and it was only an auto! I got my first manual 6 months ago... but I drove our manual lawnmower (a big tast, right) a lot when I was about 7. Awesome thread anyway. Army sounds like a great dad. He's in a better place now and my prayers go to your family. I hope I have a similar adventure in my life and my HJ47 or another 40...

Where's the next chapter Lee? You're not getting writer's block are you?

Cheers

Father's Day 2012

Well, I miss my old man tonight
And I can almost see his face
And Oh the fights that we had
When my brother and me got him mad
He’d get all boiled up and he’d start to shout
We knew what was comin’
So we tuned him out
And now the old man is gone
And I’d give all I own
To hear what he said
When I wasn’t listenin’
My old man

--Steve Goodman

Happy Father's Day! If you aren't a father yourself, then be sure to remember the one you have.

Sea Knight I have been reading this thread for the last 3 days. WOW!!! I havent posted on here in years until recently. What an experience. Im loving it. I had my 18 month old in my 40 today messing around while trying to get her back up and runnin. Its a great feeling. Happy fathers day to all. I noticed you like your beer. If you havent yet you have to try Stone Imperial Black IPA. For a stout and west coast IPA fan(which i am as well) its the best of both worlds. careful though its potent.

Just wanted to say thank you for opening my eyes and inspiring me to get back to what I love doing, learning to enjoy the journey and not focusing all my energy on the destination.
