Great chapter. And do wish your wife a happy birthday. I guess you have to write the book now. There's a girl waiting to read it. But I think you should wait until after your next epic journey with the rustbucket to include that too.

I just want someone to get laid...

Don't we all, but it's not gonna happen, not here, and not me. Maybe there's something over in s-chat? ;)

Sea Knight, you tell an amazing story, with only one leg.

 There's absolutely no truth to the rumor that I have only one leg. One of them does carry a few little mementos from my Asian vacation, but they both work. Here ya go...two legs and a rustbucket, totally appropriate for this thread.

I'll mozy over and see if I can't get that thread started.

He does have 2 legs! You might want to look out, that thing falls on you, you will need a tetanus shot, and you likely will lose something.

That's not the Turtle after 2 season on Kona?!? ;)

Great Chapter Lee! The further you go in this tale the more I look forward to buying a few copies when it hits the book store or most likely Amazon now these days. Anyways, when I get back in September I will definitely be cruising up to a Friday night Billy's meeting.

Do you think you will keep the title of this thread as your book title?

When you mention your wife's birthday as the anniversary of the Turtle shipping day... somehow my demand of the story course is not going to go in my favor...

Pay attention. :)

It's his lovely lady's birthday. He's pretty good at charming us, I'm fairly certain that he is much more adept at charming his wife. I'll try to say this without being crude.. And I'm sure I'll fail..

I think the Commander and his lady will have a good evening....

ok, all I could muster without making myself blush... :/

@Lee.

Holey Farking Shiznit.... If that is the rust bucket, we have one hell of a story ahead of us... Per another posters comments. I think I got tetanus looking at it... Hell, maybe rabies too..

It looks rescue-able, a little bodywork, a little polishing, anything is possible!!!

For getting laid..... well:ban:

Great story, thank you. Nice rustbucket photo too, but... The bezel is upside down. :D

I sure hope Jen finds this "book" your writing. We all sure enjoy it and I'm sure she would too. Thanks for making us smile...and reflect on deeper things in life.

Oh, Happy Birthday to what has to be one of the most understanding wives in the world!

I think the Commander and his lady will have a good evening....

Morning Gents, Happy Friday:

Yes, thank you, we enjoyed a most excellent birthday celebration. :D

Since this is a rust repair, road music, beer, and philosophy thread, here's some music to start the day. I dedicate this deeply meaningful song to my amazing wife...

Great song Lee, I'll put it on now in honor of the two of you. Love me some John Prine! to both of you!

When my son was little, one of our nightly rituals after I tucked him into bed in his little Yoda jammies was to tell him stories. He'd rattle off a list of military equipment that had to be included; a HUMMV, an M1 Abrams, a Blackhawk, an Apache, a Chinook........ Yeah, he was a gearhead. It still brings a smile and a tear remembering how his little face would light up as he mentally ticked off each vehicle as the story ran its course.

I almost get the same feeling as as I ride along on this story. My list is somewhat more eclectic but the smile was just as genuine as I ticked off the 912.

So, i'll be sitting here in my Yoda jammies waiting patiently for the next chapter. Thanks Lee.

I always wondered what my 40 looked like before Grogan painted it.

In spite of ourselves....

Did you watch any convict movies?

Wow, this is just incredible. I stumbled on the thread day before yesterday (don't even member how) and have barely been able to tear myself away. Great stories, great detail, character development. I am completely engrossed.

I absolutely love that, gradually, The Turtle has evolved into a living character in the story. In most of the early chapters you used the "I" pronoun when talking about driving, but slowly it became "we" - The Commander and The Turtle. I don't know if that was intentional, but it perfectly mirrors how I've begun to feel about the Turtle through reading this.

One upon a time I was an English Lit major, and your writing strikes me as a blissful blend of Jack Kerouac and John Steinbeck. Travel and Americana. Keep up the fantastic work, subscribed!

"a blissful blend of Jack Kerouac and John Steinbeck."

That explains "part" of why I like this so much. I first read Kerouac in 1995 living in Dallas, TX. I was compelled to join the Army after reading On The Road and Dharma Bums. I decided it was either Army or move to Montana. The Army won the battle, but it seems that Montana has won the war. The Army took me to Monterey, CA where I got my taste for Steinbeck. Bought my first Toyota 4x4 there too. I changed engine oil for the first time there at age 24, as well as rebuilt the knuckles, replaced suspension, etc... and got hooked on what has led me to my FZJ80 now 15 years later.

This story form reminds me of Jimmy Buffett's stories too, though maybe I'm creating that connection in my mind alone.

To try to have some point in this post: I wonder if people who own Land Cruisers tend to have had more epic adventures and/or wanderlust than other vehicle owners? Maybe that's part of the unifying element here? Maybe it's just great storytelling?

Anyway, thanks again to our fearless Commander!
