Medano Pass has dispersed camping on the Wet Mountain Valley side. Camping from the summit to the sand dunes are dedicated “primitive” sites that are reservation only.

There’s also a postage stamp of BLM land that @CenTXFJ60 showed us a few years ago. From Walsenburg go south around Mt. Blanca. When you get to the turn off for the sand dunes go right. Right away there will be a small parking lot with some placard signs, you can camp there.

Are you then going up through Poncha Springs/Monarch Pass/ Gunnison, or the southern router through Wolf Creek Pass, Pagosa Springs/Durango?
Hey Jim thanks for the information, much appreciated. Honestly haven’t given much thought regarding the north or south route after making Walsenburg. I was thinking north as then I can drop down to Ouray on some dirt via Silver Jack reservoir and Owl Creek Pass. I’ve done both north and south route so if there is something I should see on the southern route I’m interested.

Owl Creek Pass is fantastic! Smooth dirt, 20-30mph the whole way, super scenic. Great cutoff from Cimmaron on the Hwy 50 side to Ridgway. There are a few dispersed spots up there, plus a campground … but at that rate you’re so close to Ouray.

There’s always something to see every direction out here.

Yes, I have fond memories of coming over owl creek pass a while ago and it will be a nice way to close out the last miles from NYC, plus I can stock up with food in Ridgeway.

Yep, there's a good grocery store there in Ridgway. With KOA being a bit north of Ouray, the grocery store isn't very far. There's a nice back way on some dirt country roads to get there too.

Thanks! Great to have some options, I actually had a friend who lived in Monte Vista a long time ago.

Been to the San Juan’s several times in my 100 but this will be the first time in my solid axle FJ55!

I’m really looking forward to being around all the other rigs, as one who has only really been around 40’s. Seeing how they’re built, Toyota evolution over time, and watching their capabilities.
Their capabilities may have increased over the series and the years..... but I have a hard time finding anything more fun to drive than a 40 series!
