Good condition 4-speed. Owned and driven regularly for the last two years with zero issues. Just completed a 5-speed swap, so have a 4-speed available. Great for conversion from 3-speed. Comes with shifter as well. $1,250 or best offer plus shipping or local pick-up.

Is this still available?

'85. Price is negotiable. Just going from what I've found online. Make an offer if interested. Happy to work with you.

If from a 85 it would have to be a rare 40 series imported. That is a 40 series top cover. US 40 series ended with few hundred 83 FJ40s. General 40 series production ended 10/84. Those made after that date were probably made to fill contracts already in place. Most those are long wheel base. The top cover is for a 40 series. The rear tailshaft was sixteen spline up to 8/80. From then on it was nineteen spline using a different transfer case. If a US market four speed would be a H42. Others markets most likely H41, but could be either a H41 or H42.

Anywhere near that price would be 100% sure what I was buying and have pictures of the inside. Also good picture of the output shaft where the transfer case input gear rides. Those are know to wear.

Looks like a 19 spline shaft to me; not compatible with a pre-81 transfer case. BUT, if you were rebuilding it, you could swap tailshafts. I did that for @Stumpalama.

And, as John alluded, if it were an H41, it would be worth it.

Have to spin the front and find out what the ratio is.
@65swb45 built my H41 in an H42 case to mate to an Orion... 17 years ago and it is still the best mod I did for my 40.

Looks like input shaft pilot tip may be roasted

That’s a good catch there Matt. Don’t see that very often, so I wasn’t looking there. I had one worse than that cycled through here a couple of years ago. I think I showed it to @martymart or @HKforte before I junked it.

FJ45 import. This guy knows his stuff!

Not only does that input shaft need to be replaced, but there is a good chance the bearing between the input and output shafts is damaged as well (from the input shaft no longer spinning concentrically. Basically, full rebuild

GL finding an input shaft for a non US transmission.

Truly, GLWS.

4X4 world in Australia has those input shafts on eBay Australia. They do show shipping to the US. Kind of pricey but available. Would have been an option for my H55F from a BJ42 but had a friend find a very nice used one from a H41 which is the same as a H55F as long in the same year range.

Cool. So if I post it for free, I’m guessing no takers?

You haven't verified whether it is an H41 or H42 which is the deciding factor between $75 core and $300 core

I’ll take it. Even though the input gear is bad, we might still be able to get some useable parts out of it to keep others on the Road.
