I am a long time member but haven't logged in for 8 years so I'm back.
Anyway, after running my 40 to the BHCC my son couldn't wait to start working on his 72. When we got home we swapped on a distributor and carb (the PO fitted a GM carb and distributor) and got in running.
It hasn't run in 20 years or so. We then changed the oil and rebuilt the carb. As we were about to set the timing the motor stopped. And its seized. And its an F engine.
At this point I'm not sure what to do. The boy is outside right now getting the motor ready to pull but this old thing is tired and rusty. It does have a valid title and is currently road legal.
A used F? V8? Maybe a 2F?
I'm familiar with the 2F and I figure this motor died from debris clogging the pick up.

hey Darryl where are you located? Im in the city that rhymes with fun... haha

Thats a great 40 where did you find it? As far as your sons issue i feel it might not have the dizzy seated far enough down into the oil pump. Did it have oil pressure when started? My vote is a good 2F swap they can be found around sask ive seen a few. Heck i bought my last 2f for $50 and it ran like a champ. Feel free to PM me anytime to chat

I am in Regina. The dizzy was stock toyota but I never checked how far he installed it. Dang. Bad dad! No oil pressure at the gauge but none of the gauges are working.
We need a motor now I guess.

Im in your neighbourhood haha. Id love to come by and check the 40 out! Ill bring my 42 over. Nice to meet more local cruiser guys there arent many

Just checked the distributor. The oring was well out of the block.
Dammit I'm a bad dad!

Here is a pic of the boys on the way to S.D.
We had this old thing packed to the roof! The red head sat in the jump seat most of the time.
The project 40 is his.

Oh i remeber you now Darryl! Dont think we ever met but back in the old "flaming Monkeys" days haha.

If it seized because of lack of oil pressure while idling, it is possible that you can rescue it by dropping the oil pan, removing the rod and main caps and checking the bearings for galling. For any bad bearings, you can polish the crank journals with 1000 grit silicon carbide paper to remove any stuck on Babbitt and then replace the bearings and torque the caps and replace the oil pan.

Once the motor is out we will see how bad it is. I fear the pistons are stuck.

I'd check on pin_head's advice first.

Second I'd track down a 2F... or a rusty BJ60. In 96 I swapped in a SBC when my 1.5 F died. I have no regrets, but these days I could've swapped in a 2F for pennies on the dollar or a 3B for 1/2 or less.

Now I'm to old, busy, & broken to reinvent the wheel... so I'm going to enjoy it for what it is.

I would agree with the others on swapping in a 2F but just in case you wanted to keep the 1f I have one with less than 10K miles on a rebuild a few years ago that I would sell for 500.00. It is out of a 69 fj40. Sadly I am in NM so I think shipping probably kills this deal.

Good luck with it I hope it is not as bad as it seems.

He's just a few miles north of you... road trip ;)

I'd have figured out a way if I was needing an engine today. Especially given F pistons don't exist anymore.

nice cruiser, I was at BHCC years ago, and had a great time. nice to spend time with the next generation. Dad is gone now but I still remember "helping" when I was younger.

I've got a few options in MT for engines and might be able to get it transported to Malta MT.

what pin head said.... drop the pan and look, might not be as bad as you think..

@Darryl .... Hopefully you'll be able to repair your existing motor. However, should the current motor not be saved, the above offer is a "SMOKING" deal!!!!!! And I'd find a way to make the motor above appear in my garage.

Wow great deal. This is a road trip. Going to talk with the boy after work today. Perhaps I could get it shipped to Montana.
We are going to pull the pan and have a look once the motor is out. It seized while idling so maybe there is hope.
