RW vs ICON wheels

Also, if you like the rebounds, but don't love the fake bead lock look, check out the new ICON Vector 5. Same specs, no fake beadlock. I think these are moving into first choice for me.

From looking at ICON's site it looks like these don't fit.

I think they have them in the 5x150 now, but they are not listed yet. I might have gone with those if they had them when I got my Rebound's.

For OEM to RW, the weight difference is a little over 9lbs, or approaching a 30% weight reduction. I agree tire selection is important, but you can definitely tell the difference in braking, and although I did not test, I believe in acceleration as well.
Can be slightly felt in acceleration (may have been felt even more if I didnt get heavy KO2 tires. I think this is the biggest reason to get the RW wheels. Also, I was surprised how everyone at discount tire knew about them and were treating my car like a Ferrari, even though there was a Ferrari getting tires changed.

Icons may be nice because its something new and different. I don't think it will have the performance of the RW but thats reflected in the price. Online I see too many photos of RW but in the wild I think I have seen one other LC with them. Toyota actually recommends them in the LC instruction manual. I found that very interesting to see their strong recommendation/opinion.

I think any of the wheels mentioned above are great and see which one calls to you. Lucky for me @Markuson was able to poke/push me hard enough for me to buy them. I wanted some other TRD wheel that wouldn't fit normally but I am glad he coaxed me to buy the RW wheels. Technically I bought 6 of them before I bought the LC.

One of the reasons I came to LC from older G Wagons was because Toyota feels light on its feet. The RW improved that noticeably to me. The KO2s did affect braking slightly going from 18" highway easy to roll tires.

Same - I would have gone with the Vectors in bronze if they were available.

I ordered up the ICON Vector 5 17x8.5 in the Matte Bronze for my ‘15 Gray LC, they say they are matte, but feel and look satin. Also, I weighed them and they come in at about 28 lbs /rim, Don’t know how that compares to the RW

just bought six speeds about a month ago. Didn’t see the Vectors. Wish I had. Love the look.

Aesthetically, I like that the number of spokes are a multiple of the holes for the wheel studs. Always wished the RWs had either 5 or 10 spokes instead of 12.

TLDR: I chose RWs over Icon Rebounds and don't regret my choice but there are considerations.

I was in your shoes a year ago, debating whether to get Icon Rebounds or Toyota's Rock Warriors. I ended up going with RWs due to their forged construction and I did like the look of the "fake beadlock" or "valve stem protector". That ring has taken a bashing from some boulders and protected the wheel so I think it's done it's job. The ring is secured with a lot of screws that can come loose if you don't pay attention and you should secure them with locktite (which I think the instruction manual from Toyota tells you to do). Also, if you want an even wider stance, you'll need spacers. All of these factors considered, I wanted a Toyota product that had a good reputation here on MUD that also reduced unsprung weight while increasing strength for our heavy rigs.

Bumping this thread up... My new to me 2008 has the stock 18" wheels on it, and the BFG 285/65/18 tires are so new looking I want to keep the 18" wheel size. I see everyone running the 17" Icon or other wheel brands. Has anyone run an 18" Icon Vector wheel, and is there a main reason to not run an 18" wheel, or do they not make the correct offset in that rim size?

thanks

Why is it that no one makes a more concave wheel?
Whoever makes a forged concave wheel for the LC200 will have my money.
The LC would look awesome with a concave wheel.

Unsure about icons offerings but plenty of people do run 18s. The forged TRD Pro wheels are 18, some Dakar zeros, etc.

A big reason many do run 17s is for a given tire diameter the sidewall is taller, which means slightly better compliance and flat resistance off-road.

I’d have zero concerns running 18s if you can find one you like.

At the time I bought my Icon Wheels the Vector only came in 17" and I believe still does.

Agreed, I would buy the in ICON Vector 5 18x8.5 in Titanium...... if they were available.
Let us know if anyone is aware of an 18" option that we are not seeing.

18's are fine and a slightly better mix for off-road and street characteristics than a 17" which is perfect for off-road but a little mushy at speed on road. The 17" is more common and has a lot more variety in terms of tire sizes and selection and is typically quite a bit cheaper as well. I usually run a 18" if it's available in a wheel and tire combo that I like as I do put quite a few road miles on my vehicles but I have no issues with running a 17" either. The Vector is the only wheel from Icon that I'd be willing to put on my vehicle, none of the others appeal to me.

Rock Warriors and TRD wheels are great but the fitment isn't ideal.
You will need to run spacers or adapters to really fit large tires perfectly and widening the track is very beneficial to the platform anyway.
I don't like running spacers personally so for that and the availability i would look elsewhere for a +30-35 wheel.

I am currently running the lightest 17" wheel i could find at 24lbs +25 ET and I never liked the design.
My real question is why is it so hard to find wheel weights? Does anyone know who makes the lightest strongest 18" wheel?
What does the TRD BBS forged 18 weigh? My next wheel will be an 18, i regret the 17s.

IIRC TRD Forged is about 27# and RW 24#

And agreed on spacers. But if tire size will stay in the 285/70/17 range +50 works great and keeps all the mud in the wheel wells. I went back and forth on whether to run /75 but eventually settled on /70 being a good balance. Plus that is what the Dakar 200 runs.. clearly it can handle some varying terrain.

Buried somewhere in here is discussion on the BBS wheel weight. Note that someone measures it early in the thread and seems to have a bad scale.
