Ok, actually made me laugh out loud, thanks, I needed that. :p
Perhaps this is a dumb question, however do you know where all the nuts and bolts actually go? Did you catalog the nuts and bolts?
I have no idea, but they look pretty!
Seriously, I have no idea.
Just habit I guess. I have a good memory and I have taken out all of these bolts at least once before, some of them many times. There is also a finite number of ways that any mechanical component can go back together, sorting and categorizing the parts helps immensely, you start to end up with piles of just 8 bolts that are all the same, it only takes a few mental steps from there to refresh the memory and figure it out.
There are also standards that Toyota follows for their bolts, a combination of size, thread pitch, head style, head markings, thread type and length that all start to come together when you really look at it. If its a fine thread 11mm shank flange head bolt you know that it is for a high strength specific application, head markings help as well, no ticks are low grade no stress fasteners, two ticks are mid grade semi structural, numbers get into higher grades and ratings. Washer size is another indicator of use, it all starts to add up after awhile.
The other thing to keep in mind is that I've never had a complete cruiser, they have all been built from junk, so I am used to detective work when it comes to the bolts.

Care to share the source for that foam on the heat duct? Looks like good stuff for a sound dampening layer under the carpet and over a layer of the aluminum faced damper.
That is actually exactly what it is for, I like to get sound stuff from Raamaudio and that is some peel and stick foam from him that i had on hand and thought would do the trick nicely.
(don't go rush to order any, he is out of stock, and I am waiting on more :crybaby: )
In addition to that I have a whole collection of foam strips that I have saved over the years, all different densities and sizes, I used those for seals and padding as needed.

Very cool Kevin. The more I thought about my articulation comment, the less I thought that section of frame would potentially contribute much to flex anyway. It is probably more in the cross pieces and how they attached and flex.
It's only metal....

The new plating on the hardware is very nice. I was wondering how you were going to sort it (based on the old pics). Now we know. Reminds me of my recent engine "brightening" on my Dad's old AMX. That body floor looks like a lot of work.
$58 dollars on plating and $24 on tackle boxes from Cabellas. :p
The sorting is key though. (and that took all evening with help from my wife)

Thanks Kevin, looks like good stuff, and a good price too. Cheaper than the eDead I usually get, will give it a try in the 80 later in the summer I imagine.

The plating was less $$ than I would guess it to be.

and the Hilux is not too bad, either!

To sort the hardware, it's possible to look at the parts catalog and deduce what bolt goes where. Toyota hardware characteristics are encoded in the PN.

E.G. a bolt that has the PN 91111-40820 is 8mm dia x 20mm long.

I don't know why it's taken me so long to get around to reading this thread - fantastic work KevinM!! Makes me a little prouder to be a member of "the tan club"!!

I don't think you should be too hard on yourself with your bodywork skills - those windscreen frame repairs looked pretty good to me. I might have a couple of those to do myself soon as it stops raining here. I'm also thinking of going nuts with the ATF fluid idea in the roof seams and down the A-pillar as I have a couple of leaks there and my crappy bog/paint repairs are just cracking again in the heat.

Can't wait to see this finished!! Good Luck with the rebuild, I'll be watching with interest!

Great Post

You are indeed a scholar... Motivation for the upcoming build. I can't believe I have missed this thread. Curious where you got all of your acid dipping done. I am in Eugene also and about to stumble through this tedious process in a couple weeks.

Great progress! My favourite colour on the 60's great job so far. I cant help but think every time I see the pictures of the re done hardware how it looks like the automotive version of gold nuggets.

The truck is going to be the closest thing to brand new that you can get when done, its fantastic.

On the west coast, that truck is going to outlive you...

I love bolting together all the clean and new parts. So much more fun than all the dirty stuff and sanding.

Awesome! So clean and nice! If you ever get bored when this is done, I'll send mine to you ;)!

Great job!

What's the story with the Toyota pick-up that is parked in your driveway?

Zack

Gotta have a truck to take the cruiser parts to town in! :D

Looking really good!
