Was getting the windshield on a 2000 LX470 replaced and they found rust making it unreplaceable until fixed. Was getting quotes from auto body shops around me for about $1000-$1500. Anybody have experience with rust in this area? Could it turn into a bigger job / worse than it looks?

Appreciate any help!

TY!

That price range sounds correct. I had corrosion in a few places along with drilled out trim mounting locations. Mine needed about $2500 in body work before the new glass could go in.

Since this is largely non-cosmetic you can DIY something rather easily... unless your trim mounting holes are fubar, then you're in for a half-ass repair or less of a DIY-mission for a proper repair (unless you happen to be a skilled welder).

Mine was similar to yours. Luckily I had a second vehicle so I could spend time removing the rust. I used a combination of Sanders, picks, files, and carbide cutters to remove the rust in its entirety. It was pitted after the removal and had a small pin hole in which I used a welder to close up. Don’t use rust converters as they don’t work, they just seal up the rust on the surface leaving it to continue to spread underneath.

Is that POR-15 in the last photo? I don't have the glass out of mine yet but mine does look pretty bad (worse than the above). Not quite sure what my plan of attack will be yet.

If it looks bad before the glass is out, prepare for something gnarly underneath. Mine had just a tiny spec of visible rust, but was ugly under the trim and glass...
