Running Wires thru the rear hatch (1 Viewer)

Currently setting up solar on the roof and was planning on running the wires thru the rear hatch. I have been running the cable for my magnetic antenna like this for some time and haven't noticed any water intrusion or other adverse affects. However these cables are larger and there is two of them. I've seen people mention this method over the last year but my search came up dry looking for examples or other methods. Any comments or suggestions welcome, just wanted to ask those who have gone this routes for some feedback before putting the side panels back on.

Can you outline the steps for removal of the upper rear side panel?

Pull and pray! Honestly, it was the easiest panel I have had to take off to date. From memory, I think the only things to be aware of was to remove seatbelt bolt first and to slightly remove the bottom panel as well. For the bottom panel, there is one screw where the cargo net holder thing is (sorry, don't know what to call it) other than that a gentle pull pops it all out.

The part where the bottom bolt is the far left middle of the picture below. You have t otwist the cargo net holder to remove it and expose the bolt (Phillips head).

The upper panel clips into the lower panel, so slight removal of the lower helps completely remove the upper.

Hope that helps.

Are those marks on the wheel humps from the ARB drawers? Uck. I noticed it was a really tight fit and figured there would be some marks. I tried to put a piece of cloth on mine to prevent that but we will see next time I remove them..

Yup. Was planning on a good scrub and possible protection before they go back in. Realistically my third row will never go back in and hopefully will get buried with this vehicle, so I'm not too concerned, at least that's what i tell myself.

Yes, thanks. If I go this route, I don’t want to remove my drawers and it looks like I wouldn’t have to.

Isn't there also a fastener behind that seat release lever?

Having the drawers out definitely helped, but i do think you could flex the bottom panel enough to remove the top panel.

Thanks @Eric Sarjeant! Ordered grommet.

Please post back once you do it. For the time being I am having dissent route my solar thru the firewall when they do the tail light/camera re-wire for the rear bumper. But I will most likely ad some camp lights to the rack at some point and will probably go the grommet route.

Will do. Not sure how much copper I can fit in that grommet, will probably send a single 5 conductor topside and have room for expansion.

There's not a lot of real estate through the grommet or in the narrow sheet metal channel, but this is an awesome way of running a few wires. I realize the grommets are cheap, but if anyone in SD wants one (for free), I usually have plenty. And truth be told, probably throw away a few a week:oops:

I ran two 14 gauge wires thru the left pass thru, could maybe squeeze another one or two. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I don’t have a powered hatch.

I'll take 2 if you have enough? Thanks

Of course.. let me make sure I have two in hand before you make “travel plans”

There is another rubber body plug (no wires passing through) under the side of the bumper skin on the vertical surface that he may be referring to? You need to take the bumper skin off to see it well.

Exactly.

You remove the screws on the rear part of the passenger rear wheel inner fender.. then you can pop off the rear bumper skin.

This picture is looking from the rear toward the front on the passenger side.

Thanks to everyone on this thread. I have a lot of wiring to do for lights/antennas on the roof that will wire into my fuse block attached to the forward face of my drawers and have been stumped about the best way to bring the wiring into the cabin. This thread has provided enormous help in planning that effort. My Saturday is now fully planned!
