Hi Guys,

looking to replace the mattress that came with my RTT. Mine is a "tents on a rack" chinese brand. I like it but the one thing I hate is the quality of the mattress. Hoping I can find something that is denser and more comfortable. The mattress right now allows my body to hit the floor. I would like something firmer and more supportive.

would like to hear from others that have replaced theirs and what they used? any idea on what the standard mattress size is?

thanks,

Noah

I just ordered a 2" memory foam mattress topper with the intent of putting it on top of the existing mattress. I can't speak to its effectiveness yet, but it sounds like that's what a lot of people do.

Amazon. My stock mattress is the same width as a Full XL mattress.

I would measure your current one and find a mattress topper that matches it, or close to.

Costco usually has the toppers too. Some are thick enough to probably use alone.

Grab the mattress topper at Costco; the memory foam option. Although I've not used one in a RTT, I have used it to sleep on plenty of pic-nic tables and they're pretty hard :meh:.

Just to qualify, I sleep on a very plush mattress at home and still have no problem sleeping on picnic tables with the Costco memory foam mattress topper. FWIW.

thx for this.

the real question is though why are you constantly sleeping on picnic tables? :) j/k btw....

As far as Pic-nic tables: I take road trips and am too cheap to pay for hotels - especially since I'm a moderate hotel snob o_O and won't sleep in anything less than a spring hill suites ($$$). Thus, I take my sleeping bag, find a campground, and unroll it on a picnic table with pad underneath. Trust me when I say this option is far more enjoyable than even the most posh hotel. Also, I'm far too lazy to pitch a tent :p.

My wife and I have kids so when they travel with me we just get a hotel, but when alone I prefer the open air. Now that my :princess: bought me this bad ass fzj80 I'll probably just sleep in that. We are also shopping roof rack and RTTs so this discussion is pertinent to our research. Maybe time to update to a full size topper :hmm:.

What thickness did you end up getting from Costco, also did you place it on top of your current RTT pad or did you use it to replace it?

Tried many but in the end EXPED is my choice. As good anything I have ever slept on ever.

Not cheap and it has taken years to spend the $$$ but like a fridge the cost has been long forgotten with the positive experience.

You need to ask yourself how much an excellent night sleep is worth. For me I spent ~ 50 nites last year in my CampTeq.

I went custom. Started with 3 1/2" of firm foam, the :princess: hated it, so I added another 2" of soft foam on top. :)

Maybe there's a guy like this near you: http://www.bobsfoam.com/

thx phil, those mats look nice, too rich for my blood though as I would need to buy 2 of them to fit the family in the tent. I do like their pillows though, been looking for something like that for awhile as i have neck problems and just one night in the wrong position can mean a week of pain. I do have a couple thermarest mattresses that are great and was thinking of putting those under the rtt mattress but don't want the pain of filling them up. I am going to try a cheap walmart memory foam mattress placed under the stock rtt mattress first to see if that helps.

@1973Guppie I can help you with a replacement Tepui mattress if you want to try one of those.

would be interested in hearing how it might differ from what I have now? pm me pricing please and how it differs? what I don't want to have happen is to get another mattress that is not comfortable.....

I hear ya. The tough thing is that sleeping mattresses are so subjective. What feels great for one person might be the worst possible thing for the next. I don't know much about what you have currently so I don't know how to tell you how a Tepui Mattress would differ. What I can say is that for me it has been quite comfortable. I'm a side sleeper so a lousy mattress puts me basically sleeping against the hard base of the tent. The mattress is made of high-density foam.

I'm guessing that your current tent is similar in size to the Tepui Kukenam. My price on that mattress is $105. A new cover for it is $50.
