RTH- To much pressure in the valve cover!?

I went to pick a new throttle cable from toyota, and decied to take my truck.
Ran fine the whole way there, and about 75% the way home my oil pressure dropped to 0 at idle and 25 at 3500rpm. It idles with low oil pressure normally but you can usually read it at 10-15psi. I was worried, but as long as my temp was fine I would trek home. It only takes 3 psi to float a bearing.

I popped my hood when i arrived to town and there was oil everywhere! It was pooled in my air cleaner, sizzling on the exhaust, dripping off the rear driveshaft, i mean everywhere!

I noticed the my pcv valve and the other little hose deally on the valve cover were 'blown' off. I put them back on, and by the time i got home, a full 3miles from town, they had blown off again. They are fine at idle, but when you put any RPMs through the engine they shoot off at a very hi speed.

I called wristy (who is fawkin cool) and he told me to check the timing, vaccum pressure, and compression check. All checks good and we cant figure anythign out! 180psi on the compression, 1-3psi variation as far as dad remembers. Vaccum at 18 and timing is exact.

Mud' please help!
 
Howdy! Check/replace the PCV valve. It may not be releasing the crankcase pressure into the intake manifold. May have a bad rubber grommet, not holding it tight enough. John
 
Just had this same issue. You have a bad PCV valve. Change the grommet, too. Both are available at Advanced Auto Parts for like $2 each.

Do i have to have a pcv? Can i drill it out to create no way for it 2 be bad?
LIke i said, im on my 4th or 5th. I got my sliders in. Pics to come when im at home!
 
If you could find a breather that would fit in there, that would work.

Yeah, you'd have to cap that off...or install a vacuum gauge.:D

Maybe im wrong, but doesnt the carb burn excess oil? Wouldnt capping it off mean having to readjust everything? That vacuum is very important, according to my father. But hes a chevy/ford/mopar/heep kinda guy.
 
there is that baffle under the valve cover. maybe its clogged up in there, and building up enuff pressure to the point where it blows hard at once and causes the hose to pop off. never seen it, but seems logical.

the old old valve covers have bolts that hold that baffle on. the newer one is riveted. you may want to consider removing it and inspecting it
 
Alright, im just happy it doenst leak!
But i now have an exhaust leak. Fix one thing and another starts! :(
 
Mine does the same damn thing, except blows oil into the air cleaner. It doesn't make sense that there's that much pressure in the valve cover and my PCV system is all new. I can't figure it out for the life of me.
 
I would do a leakdown test next. It will tell you how much blowby you have on your rings, which can cause excessive crankcase pressure.
 
i agree with wristpin. remove the valve cover and make sure it is clear under the baffle. if it has rivets drill them out and replace with screws and use threadlock. everyone who has a 20/22R type motor should do this every 100,000 miles or so. also check the intake where the pcv hose goes to to make sure it's not clogged in there instead.
 
They are actually not rivets. They are pins that were part of the casting, they put the steel baffle on over the pins then swage the pins down. I have my valve cover prepped to go to powdercoating, I had to take that baffle off. I very carefully drilled the heads off, I used a SHARP 3/16" bit. Then after I got them all off and the baffle removed, I used the "dimple" left by the drill bit to drill and tap them for #8-32 screws. You have to be VERY careful when doing this that you don't drill through, there's not a lot there. You need a drill press, obviously.

There's a gasket under the baffle that is not available from Toyota. I'll either cut a new one or just use RTV when I put mine back together.

Honestly, you might be better off just getting another valve cover. It's a very tedious job. There's tons of them on eBay.
 
Well if you are getting 180psi then it is doubtful you have any blow-by, unless there is some sort of valve sealing issue, that being seed I would think that your compression numbers would reflect. I would bet on a fault PCV valve, STICK with an OEM valve, $9.00 @ the dealer. I've successfully cleaned the valve covers with out removing the baffle, lots of solvent and time, If the baffle was clogged then why would your PCV blow off the valve cover....just thinking out loud.

KLF, it sounds like blow-by to me, so i agree with the leak down test, and that gasket that is not available from Toyota comes in the felpro complete engine kit, i will have to look i might have a few.
 
Well if you are getting 180psi then it is doubtful you have any blow-by

Once I got my leakdown tester and learned how to use it, I gave away my compression tester. They are not a reliable test of engine health. A leakdown test will tell you much more about your engine. Every engine has blow-by, even a brand new one.

That gasket is for the earlier (pre-85) valve cover with the removable baffle. It won't fit on the later valve covers.
