When re-installing spider gears into the rear third, how hard should they be to get in? Don't recall them being hard to get out but they're not gonna go in without a fair amount of force. Anyone?

EZ out and EZ in.

Put the side gears in first, then one spider gear and shim and rotate to the back 180 degrees, then install the other spider and shim and rotate back 90 degrees to install the center pin.

So why is it not just sliding right in? I'm sayin it isn't anywhere NEAR going in, and these very same gears came out if this thing!!

When you say side gears, you mean the bigger ones, right? Neither is even close to going in easily.

Side gears are the big ones. They have a shim or spacer too. They slide right in. Is there any wear or scoring on the carrier bores for the gears or the gear shafts that fit in to the bores? Otherwise, there is no other place for interferance.

When you say "going in" do you mean won't even fit back inside the carrier? When I pulled mine to install my Spartan locker I remember them basically falling out onto the bench when I pulled the cross-pin.

Like pin-head said, they should go in without much effort, they have to turn inside the carrier so they should go in easily and with some slack.

There is no scoring on either side that I see.

i removed them to do a locker install. This specific locker does not use thrust washers, and I found that the locker was rubbing against the side of the carrier. This made Gawd-awful noises driving down the road.

I resigned myself to remove the locker, thinking that the easy part was the spider gear reinstall. Now this.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

So what is the hang up? You may have to tilt the side gear to make it fit inside the carrier window, but after that it should go right into position.

I can put it in position, but it won't even begin to slide in. Just sits on the very outer lip. I even gave it a tap with an extension through the opposite side, but it didn't budge. Very weird. Any chance the locker's parts somehow warped the carrier?

If the lip on the gear won't fit into the diff case, its possible that your diff case has been damaged.

Here they are. I do see some issues on both faces after a thorough cleaning. How to proceed?

Instructions call for a gap of 0.145-0.17 inches, which is 3.6-4.3 mm. I thought it was close to the minimal gap when installing, but apparently not quite wide enough.

Wondering if I polish the €£¥# outta the affected areas, if the thrust washers will give me enough buffer to mitigate the friction-or will I need an entirely new third?

The carrier is extensively scored from running the locker with no washer. No wonder the gear won't go back in. You need a new carrier. You might consider a good used differential or a newARB carrier.

Believe it or not, that's from running MAYBE 15 miles in city driving. Instructions from the mfg specifically state to not reinstall the thrust washers.

That really stinks. Even worse that I tried to call to clarify with the manufacturer and still haven't been called back. Very frustrating.

Yes. It is a Spartan, bought new and re-re-re verified to be the correct model prior to install. Understand, I'm not bashing the locker, it appears to be well made and very sturdy. I researched the use (or lack of use) of the washers prior to purchase, and thought there'd been enough installs that it'd be fairly seamless.

My frustration comes from dropping $300 or so for a product to do a job, making a good faith effort to do my part on the install, and having it damage my DD. As pinhead points out, I can get a new carrier (which then involves setting preload and other measurements I'm not equipped to do) or buy an ARB rear, which I really didn't want to do.

Anyone wanna buy a locker?

Maybe more importantly now, anyone got a rear third they'll sell for cheap?

I saw 4.11 third for sale on here. I don't remember how much though.

Been sniffing around and saw one with an Aussie locker already installed for $400, but it sold. If you see where it was, surfer, please let me know.

Anyone know how involved swapping out carrier would be? Cost?

Also, does anyone see a way that I can clean up this carrier (buffing, etc) and make it work since the OEM has the thrust washer that will act as a buffer? Or is it just toast?
