Well, things may have been a little adventurous getting to Ouray from Engineer Pass. It looks like I’m puking a bit of gear oil on the DS rear. It could be just a clogged breather pushing oil through or a failed seal.

I switched to the hex keyed plugs and fill, but forgot to pack it. I think it is a 10mm IIRC. We are headed to Telluride via Ridgeway. Any recommendations on where to pick one up so I can monitor levels.

I’d like to limp our way back to Tucson as I don’t have the parts or special tool on me to fix it myself. I’m not opposed to getting into a shop, but that would be a multiday adventure. Worse places to be stuck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Picked up a 10mm hex and some gear oil in Ouray and didn’t leak any on the five miles of forest road getting there. We should be good to go.

If you have a few days to hang out the SAS crew will showing up by the end of the week 😎 some may already be there!

We are interested even to just share a campsite, we are going toward Telluride for some at-large camping and will head back to Tucson on Friday or Saturday. Other than that we have no plan.

Ross,

You know where I live so hit me up if you need something, just like last time!!! It's been a spell since our paths crossed.

I'll be heading to Ouray for the SAS this coming Sunday.

I probably have one here in Junction or can get one, let me know and I can check. Was also just down there Sat and Sunday.

I'm should be there on Sat at the KOA site # 80
I have a spare rear seal in my stash that I will through in just in case
Should have room for a extra Rig/tent if needed

You guys are all awesome! We are set up somewhere above Telluride for the night. Things seem to have settled down and will not need a seal. I’m pretty sure we can make it home.

I will have to do SAS next year. My copilot needs to be at work Sunday morning.

Thanks again for all the support. I’m just glad I found a 10mm hex in Ouray and Mike @Burt88 in Montrose let me borrow his lift to check things further. Since I had access to a lift I threw on some new brake pads as I was an embarrassment to the Cruiser world driving through towns.

I’m trying to come up with a joke about boiling gas in the gas tank and if I’ll explode. Words are failing me.

One final thing about Mike’s shop, it was heaven having the smell of roasted coffee to balance the smell of gear oil.

Edit: It is too fricken weird the level of cell service.

Of note on this trip was finding and extended cab Chevy long bed pulling a 20ft trailer up the Alpine Loop from Ouray toward the Animas Fork. He was half way up snagged on a hairpin and would accept no help. It was a bit sketchy getting around him.

And made it back to Tucson with no drama or additional leaking. Still smells like gear oil back there, but could be me being overly sensitive. I’ll rebuild the rear axle soon.
