In this GX section there doesn’t seem to be much discussion on the RSCA switch use. I haven’t really given it much thought the times I have been off-road, mainly since I spent ten years in an 80. Now that I am getting more comfortable in an IFS rig and will be doing more challenging trails, I am wondering how many people actually use it or remember to push the button when off-road. Having the system reset each key cycle doesn’t help.

Thinking about it more now that I am currently headed to Moab for a few days and I disconnected the switch to use the slot for my led light bar. Just haven’t gotten around to relocating it yet, not sure if I will. And yes, I know the purpose of the switch.

My 03 doesn't even have one. It deactivates when in Low or CDL is on without any indication. I have done a LOT of wheeling in my GX and I haven't had any issues.

Dan, just to confirm, does this deactivate without any indication on all years when in Low or CDL? I have an '09 with the RSCA switch, but if I don't need to hit it when I'm already in Low or have the CDL on, that would be convenient. Either way works, just making sure I understand my truck's systems. It's likely moot for me, since if I'm driving with my 1 year old daughter anywhere this switch is needed, my wife would kill me, but it's good to know for future reference.

Huh my 04 has one. I use it for peace of mind. Subbed for any info on automatic disengagement in Lo/locked

I can't find anything in the owner's manual that says side curtain airbags are disabled when in low range or with the CDL locked. I can infer based on the contents of the owners' manuals that roll sensing was not a feature on 03's, but I don't have confirmation of that. Note the phrasing in the 2003 owner's manual, specifically the "in response to a severe side impact, the SRS curtain shield airbag [...]" bit.

Compare that to these pages from a 2005 owner's manual, which specifically denote roll sensing:

I can confirm in my 09 manual, the RSCA switch disables the roll-sensing deployment, but side impacts may still trigger a deployment of the curtain airbags.

I always forget to push the RSCA button on my 05’ hopefully it de-activated when center lock is on because I do always hit that button the second I hit the dirt!
I don't think it does, otherwise I'd expect the RSCA light on the dash to be illuminated .

My concern is forgetting to hit the button, going off-road, getting in some weird angle, then boom, airbag discharge.

What I wonder is how big a concern is the risk of accidental discharge? I think @Bluetribal came closest to answering that question.

It happened to someone on GXOR. Expensive day.

I don’t do FB. Do you remember the circumstances that triggered it?

I don't have RSCA. Maybe another plus of 03? I have been in VERY sketch angles, banging, high speed whoops and hitting hard, etc and never had a problem.

That does sound like a plus to me. I am guessing the sensors must be different or you have the auto off otherwise I think you would have blown those airbags by now.

Been in a hotel room in GJ for a couple of days for meetings. Hitting Kokopelli trail this afternoon and I think a camp project is Macguivering in and off switch as my factory switch is sitting on the workbench at home... haha

My FJC didn’t have one but it was an 07. The ‘10 and newer did. I’d guess that if you have the switch, use it. If you don’t, it more than likely disables when the CDL is engaged or possibly when 4LO is engaged. Not sure of that but it definitely deactivates because I had that thing doing balancing acts several times and on the trail with folks that were as well with no deployments.

So following up. Wife and I did Kokopelli a week ago and I wanted to turn this off. Not having the switch I made a little jumper out of some bailing wire I had so I didn’t have to worry about things like Cisco wash.

I guess I need to figure out where to put the switch, or maybe wire into the CDL circuit so I don’t have to think about it.
