When doing rosette welds is it better to cut a number of smaller holes or to cut fewer with large holes? Is it important to be able to see the underlying metal or fill in the space?

I've never read anywhere the correct sizing and spacing of rosette welds. I just make them look proportionally correct to the piece the plate is getting welded to. On small holes I fill it totally and larger holes 3/4" or so I run a bead around the edge. I'm sure there is some information on the interwebs somewhere, just never thought it that important for my junk.

I would recommend making the hole large enough to know that you're getting good weld penetration on both the top and bottom plate. I have found that if the hole is too small, the weld tends to be biased toward the top plate and IMHO isn't quite a strong as one done with a larger diameter hole.
