I don't like the gutter mounts on the FJ that fiberglass to raingutter connection seems too fragile to me. I would prefer the connection to the windscreen hinge in front. Bumper in rear

The rain gutters on a 40 are incredibly strong (if in good condition). I would stress, however, that I feel it is very important to use rain gutter clamps with WIDE feet to spread out the load). We run full sized racks with 3 clamps per side (and our "Triple Dog" supports on the 40's and have had no problem carrying very heavy loads.

Does someone make such a thing?

This roof rack has been on my 40 for about 25 years and I've stood in it many times taking photographs. Did I mention I weigh 285 lbs? The rain gutters have not sagged or bent down. They are not fragile.

I have a Garvin Wilderness rack on my Tahoe and ordered it from a supplier found on the internet. I would check with truck and 4x4 companies close to you to see if they carry the brand. You need to understand that SOR is known for their excessive shipping cost. I'm sure you can get it delivered at a much more reasonable cost through a different company. You might go to the Garvin website and see if they list companies that you can purchase from that are closer.

I am going to build my own roof rack, as well as bumpers, rock sliders, spare tire rack, roll cage, etc. I'm a fabricator and a weld line supervisor so I have the knowledge and resources to pull it off. What I plan on doing is bolting the roof rack to the roll cage THROUGH the fiberglass using rubber washers to keep it water tight. Just some food for thought

As flexible as the 40 is, good luck with maintaining that water tight seal.

Before you cut up a hard top, I'd have to side with those that agree a raingutter mount is plenty strong.Mine is an old Confer rack that I cut down a few inches so it would fit in my garage. I've gone on many many hunting trips over very rough country with heavy loads up there. Never had a sag or bend in my gutters. Look at "CruiserStuff" rack , his is the same as the old Confer, and is what I would buy if I was in the market, just my opinion.

<<<You better read more cos the body and the bumpers-frame sometimes-manytimes twist different on off road situations. If you use the windshield for a base then you have to use the body at the back,i dont remember but there a lot of post about that matters

Its not going to flex much if the frame is tied to the roof (via roll cage) but thanks for the tip. I'll keep it in mind.

Well, I'm glad to hear that the rain gutters have held up so well for you folks. When I did the entire restoration of mine the PO had the gutter mount clamp system for his rack. Those were the single most screwed up sections of the entire roof rebuild. I needed to completely cut out and replace all the sections that had the clamps. They had broken away from the fiberglass and the gutters were bent and rusted.

That experience left me feeling that this 35 year old cruiser hard top was just fine except for the damage to the roof/gutters from the rack. So Lets visit the clamp styles and connections used. Cause the one that was one mine is not a good plan!

Too bad I rolled the truck a few weeks back, although I kept the frame up top for my next truck, Ill have to get the bars/ladder remade.

Nice setup... I think SOR sells an "expedition" set like this for major $$$.

I don't have a problem with mounting to the fiberglass top. Should be plenty strong for my needs. The nice thing about DrSlug's rack is that you can take the top off and still have the rack on! Any pics of that?

Wow, what color yellow is that and is that original or new paint? I love it.

That is Caterpillar Yellow. Not a FJ40 original color. It is actually a rattle can paint job haa haa! Laying all jokes aside, it came out nice and shiney and is very tough. I scratch it, I sand it and respray it. It is a brand of paint I buy here at ACE HARDWARE called Pylox #137 a epoxy based paint. Cost 139 Php a can or $3.19. Personally I would never go back to a paint shop again. The entire truck including Anti-Corrosion Primer, Paint, and sand paper cost me roughly $122.00 not including the cost of an electric sander. Thanks for the comment. I like the color coz its different. I have a post on here called the Amazing Rattle Can.

I do like that setup especially with the ladder incorporated. Very nice if your not a hard core boonie mud slinger. Which I am not lol.
