Well ,just finish to install back the roof rack, my rig its for camping so you will notice how i attach the rear support, we use the old holes when i have the other soft top.
I add some kind of more protection for the side just in case for branches to help the old paki not to rip.
:hillbilly:..so for me its more than fine..

I REALLY like your rig. You were my inspiration for the wheels. I am soooo glad I went witht he FJ steelies. I want one of those soft tops but it will have to wait. Seriously, NICE RIG!

Very nice work Eshu, looks good and functional. Yours has always been one of my fovorite Cruisers.

Eshu,

Eshu,
Love the rack. The bend in the side bars is a really nice touch, very smart. I have a question re: your decision on the placement of the base of the front rack supports. You decided to mount the rack on the upper part of the windshield hinge instead of the lower half of the same hinge. As you know this is a choice that has been discussed alot in the "roof rack over soft top" threads. I just got my OCD beetle soft top so I´m coming around to this issue. BTW I plan on shamelessly copying elements of your rack, just saying.:D

I been reading on those threads long time before i made my rack tubes, in my case i dont plan to use a roof tent or walk in,just for put a few things, maybe later a kayak, the lower half on the windshield its more strong but i decide to re-use the same plates for the same locations front and back, cos the person that made the tubes lives 1 :30 hr from my house, my 40 its my only car right now and we have to finish all in 8 hrs before the cold hit and the dark at night..and was raining last friday.

BTW I plan on shamelessly copying elements of your rack, just saying.:D  welcome ajaja i do the same from this picture that i got the idea for the side tubes..

Notice how the soft top in the curve on the bows have repairs-marks from that picture...on my rack i plan to add 3 small tubes just in front on the curves to" prevent" that on my top..my top fits so tide i think because its old... check the second paint on what i plan to do

Eshu,
Got it- I really think that adding three side legs to each side will not only give protection to the top but will also add strength to the rack. How many tubes do you have runig front to back? It looks like just two. Are you giving any thought to adding tubing there?
John

yes 2 tubes front to back and 2 small where the rack its bolted, for the moment just add the small sides forming the curves, dont know if in my case will need more strenght, but if you plan to use a roof tent then you have to add more tubes or other idea,i guess
