Rolling the dice on this fridge 63QQT $270 shipped

From my experience you get a better value with this size system to spend the money on a larger panel or more efficient loads then a MPPT controller.

I think adding another 100W panel will be enough to run the fridge but 2 panels occupy 1/2 of my rack. I need rack space for future RTT. Returning the panel for a larger load one is not ideal as I hate having to run the wires again. In a meantime, the panel will keep my battery top out.

I have 2 stand alone 100W solar systems (no other charging means) running fridges+ with no problems. A new more efficient fridge should be all you need.

This was also one of my reasons for going with the one that was half the price of the Whynter.


I saw some "other big name" 63qts go on "sale" for over $900 and thought what really do you get for four times the price?


Anyone checked on the extended warranty for the edgestars yet? I was almost thinking about the squaretrade 3 year for $38.99 although I've NEVER bought an extended warranty for anything ever before.

I ordered one as well, it said there was one left when I started, we'll see if it works out. Says there is 1 43 available for $313 right now on Compact Appliance site (more $ than 63?)

My whynter 65qt sets at 0F is draining battery too fast. Even my 100w solar with pwm charge controller cant keep up with it in AZ sun. 12.7V to 11.3V from dawn to dusk with solar charging. How are yours draining?

does your fridge not have a low voltage cutoff?
the amp draw will also depend greatly on the ambient temperature, of course.

They are suppose to. Ambient temp, contents and how often its opened will all make a difference. Just want to get some first hand results with my setup.

^Good to know. Mine has been sitting for over 24 hours on 33°f empty and my analog meter is right around 12v (sorry, can't tell exact on analog). High low has been about 65/45 here recently.

After 48 hours of mild temperatures, my group 27 battery read just under 12v. I think Ill buy one of those cigarette lighter voltage meters to monitor power for now.

48 Hours in - 12.32V...

Next reading on Monday. Temps vary between 27 and 33 deg. Ambient temp high of 70 deg.
