Coolerman and MocoNative

Resurrection of this thread ----

Anybody know where I can get a rollbar prefabbed for the long seats --- I ike the Coolerman version but if I can find an OEM to fit the long seats that would be good.

This is for my 72 FJ40

Hello, trying to resurect this thread, not hijack...

I have a '65 FJ40 and am set on keeping the long rear seats, but do not currently have a roll bar and feel i need to add one, at least in the rear for now. I plan mostly on highway use, around town, but will be taking it camping, excursions, fishing, etc and in my experience one thing leads to another so...

I spent some time this week taking measurements of my rear tub and seats, and put together a design for a rear roll bar, that may work. I also have the bi-fold rear window and would like my cage to clear the window when folded up. I believe this design wouldn't be less stiff than a typical OEM style as far as side impact or initial roll over, but probably has some short comings if i were to just land flat on the roof, in which case i think i'd be screwed anyways...

I've emailed some info to Metal Tech yesterday as they're only an hour or so up the road but haven't heard back yet.

I'd like some input, advice.

Coolerman, MDH33, Brian and Farman,

RENEWED ROLL BAR POST:

Got stuck for the last 2 years cleaning up the results of a fire. Rigs are OK but some smoke damage -- house got smoked pretty good. Farman --- the firemen were great .... however, they all stated tht they could store my rigs for me --- no problem, until the mess was cleaned up . I would have taken them up on the offer but they were drooling to heavily and don't think I would have ever gotten them back.

Now, back to the rigs...... Have you all made any progress on finding any diminsions on the 73 transitional roll-bar or the Coolerman version of the roll bar.

Next on my list of things to do.

Nice --- did not see this response (65REDFJ40).

Did you build it? Metal Tech web site is no longer working.

Has anybody fastened the center hoop to the front vertical wheel well with a bracket and then transferred the load to the main center support where the seatbelts are fastened on the "inside" of the wheel well (directly in front of the rear tire) -- see pic.

I am currently working on this mod for my cruiser. I just about have the brackets or mounts, fabricated. They transfer the load from rear fender hieght down to the main cross member directly in front of the rear wheel wells. I like the looks of the stock roll bar and this will allow me to keep it. I saw a picture one time of a cruiser with the roll bar moved forward and It really looked great. It had the effect of making the cruiser look longer. I also like the long jump seats but dont want to attach them to the roll bar. Leg room is tight as it is with passengers on both sides. I have another roll bar that I plan to mount in the rear location with horizontal bars connecting both hoops with the stock brackets to make an OEM looking family cage. I am pretty excited to see it finished. been dreaming it up for a long time.

The gas filler neck side is the tricky side. Fitment around the filler neck with my mount is the next step. The mount is like a big box that is sliced on a diagonal to match the angle of the front of the wheel well. So i will need to cut holes for the filler neck. I am building them out of 1/4" plate for strength. Should be a more positive mount than the stock location when I am done. As an added bonus, I think the mounts may be just large enough to house a 5 1/4" speaker. I am looking into that as well. I will post pictures or a new thread when I make a little more progress.

Did this roll bar design ever get any "Traction"? I was looking for a solution for the long bench seat issue as well.

I finally got mine installed. It took a little engineering to make a mount above the filler neck but I am pleased with the results. Load is transfered to main support. Roll bars are now visually balanced.

Ill chip in.

This is what I came up with. I cut the arm rests off to have clearance.

One pic shows idea of support bracket.

The seats are bolted in there factory location using the factory mounting points.

This was my solution for installing long bench seats with a roll bar.

All parts were purchased at my local Home Depot for under $20.00

Anyone else? I just bought a '69 and I want to put in a roll bar.

Sure.

Have someone build you a custom cage.
Then you will have what you want.

I'm in a similar dilemna.
There's an image further dowmn the thread of a "transitional roll bar" on a brownish beige FJ
Moving the seats forward looks like a slippery slope. I wonder about having Metalteh or someone local fabricate a longer rear bar, thus leaving as much of the vehicle intact as possible.

This is nice, I like a lot. Did you ever got this done?

Man-A-Fre use to sell a simple kit to space the long just seat away from the tub. Early set I got in 74 for my 68 model included eight U shaped brackets. 68 used two bolts at each attachment point to the top of the tub, so four each side. This had the back arm rest off the wheel well. Then either needed to make a bracket for that or bend the arm rest. Later kit for the seats with only a single bolt used a larger U shaped bracket on the front. That angled the seat in more in the front so the rear arm rest was back over the wheel well.
