Nice project. One day I'd like to build an ultralite 20" tandem axle travel trailer.
what did you seal the seams/edges of the FRP with?
Thanks CD'er...I don't think you'll ever hear "lightweight" and this behemoth in the same sentence.
I overcut the FRP by about 1/2" of an inch all the way around. I started at the bottom and worked my up so that overlap on the seams would repel water. First I blue taped 1" around the seams, then I contact cemented the field. Once the contact adh. was set, I removed the tape. Prior to setting the sheet I shot a liberal bead of 5 minute set 2 part epoxy on the whole perimeter. Once the sheet was in place (obviously it was a one shot deal, and zero room for error) I rolled it, taped the edges to hold down some pressure, and let it set for an hour.
Then I started the trimming process..first with a laminate router, finishing with a belt sander, some minor hand polishing with sandpaper. Special care had to be taken not to "overheat" the FRP.
The only seam that didn't turn out like the others was the first...I didn't realize I needed to bond the FRP and the substrate, so it's not quite as nice as all the others..but within the realm of any Mudders standards.
