Sprinters are dope to. I wouldn't mind one but at the moment I have no where to park it.

If see a van-zilla on the road, they get a wave or peace sign. And they always return the gesture 🤣

Yeah, we're remodeling our house and adding a Sprinter garage. You need a 10 foot door (or taller) for one of these. They make the RS6 look inexpensive, too. o_O

Why I will not spent a dollar on companies who suddenly pop up and make a car. Same for Tesla.

There are of course companies out there who know how to make cars, make them well and any electric offering maybe ok for certain applications like local and in town use. Otherwise wide circle around them for me.

Snowflake got his truck stuck and wanted someone else to pay for the tow bill? What a joke.

Hahaha, he saw commercials with SUV's plowing through snow drifts and drove into a snow drift and got pissed at the car company that he got stuck!   I wonder what safety protocol he broke with his recovery attempt? If I were him, I definitely wouldn't be putting my stupidity out there for the world to read about.

I know a guy who moved to Colorado from Hawaii and believed all the truck/SUV commercials were an accurate portrayal of how people really drive and had to learn a few hard lessons before he stopped bounding through fields and putting his jeep in the ditch.

so he has a family ranch but thinks the Rivian has some mythical properties that allows it to effortlessly plow through untracked off road snow on OEM all seasons…

And that has anything at all to do with Rivian being a “new” car company?

The point is the Rivian traction system went in shut down mode and after pulling it with another vehicle it did not move any longer.

"Merrill said he's dislodged cars from snow banks before, and enlisted another vehicle to help pull him out. While he was sitting in the driver's seat, unbuckled, rocking the R1S out of the snow bank, he said he accidentally triggered a safety feature that got the car stuck between the park and drive gears.

His Rivian was bricked, rendering it completely useless.

The brand new Rivian ultimately had to be loaded onto a flatbed and driven to a service center in Chelsea, Massachusetts, hundreds of miles away. The towing fee was $2,100."

If you really want one, a self storage lot is the answer. Yeah it sucks to drop $1000-1500/year but it's just part of ownership of that kind of toy. Other than to load up for a trip or unload after one, you don't really *need* to have it at home.

I have the same issue with my camping trailer. It's 9'11" tall and 25'8" long. I just pay $125/month to park it at a parking lot about 2 miles from me. When I rebuilt my garage I toyed with trying to make a spot for it but the amount of yard I would have had to give up wasn't worth it, nor was the cost if I wanted a 10' garage door and a space big enough to put it indoors, and it wasn't possible to park it outside next to the garage due to the electric poles blocking alley access on half my lot.

That has got to be a fluke right? Safety mode that basically fails in the most detrimental way to your safety and jeopardizes your life? While it is meant to be taken to remote places and actively encouraged by Rivian and is practically their entire brand identity?

Cant really be designed that way. No way bro, that is absolutely wild. Their head of engineering (or one of) was my former boss. He is not a dumbass. This guy on the otherhand…

Either way though i wouldn’t put any EV maker in the same breath as Tesla. Not yet anyway. And Tesla itself leaves A LOT of room for doubt even as the clear leader.

What kind of "safety feature" sticks a transmission between gears and bricks a car?

I’m no engineer but I have been stuck in snow and I have overloaded the circuit breakers on electric motors. People have been breaking cars when rocking back and forth in “slippery, stuck” situations and triggering circuit breakers on winch motors since they invented cars. Seems pretty reasonable to me that when spinning wildly in R one could easily kick a circuit breaker or trigger a shutdown program by pushing the D button. And I’m guessing that someone who was wise enough to test his new toy by driving around alone in deep snow might not be the person that communicates the situation accurately to the person answering the phone at the new company.
And, I imagine that when they took away the crank handle on the front of the engine people resisted, and when they removed the clutch people resisted, and the window crank, and the little flapper arm to signal turns, etc. Sometimes people just don’t like change and sometimes they don’t trust new tech.

I am not sure what you are on about but keep talking about crank handles and window cranks I guess. Maybe you can educate us about buggy whips and elevator operators.

Seems dumb to brick the car instead of a shutdown mode for a set period of time. I am not saying the driver was smart in his approach but bricking the car seems extreme.

Not surprised, remember with the new Hummer EV bricked itself in the middle of traffic in the rain for the TFL guys?

Interesting question… for me the answer is no… not at all…
For what I do with trucks, which is more remote long range type stuff…
As a 2nd or to replace my wife’s 4Xe… we were talking about the rivian suv actually.. we already have a charger so, it would work for that.
The 200 stays (and the defender..)

Yeah it's not a versus for me either, it's an "and". Wife has had one on reserve for a while. Delivery in first half of '24 is what they're telling us. They are bringing one to Vegas for reservation holders to schedule test drives in. Our test drive is 4/8 so we will see how we like it. Gonna buy it either way I presume whether or not we decide to keep it. Hopefully the resale market doesn't cool off by the time we get ours in the event she doesn't like it.

The better news is that if we keep it it will push the LC out of DD use so I can hopefully start building it out the way I'd like to. Also will hopefully justify the large garage workshop to be built in the back to keep it in. This may end up being one damn expensive R1S...

In the mood to be an Askhole:

Im just 2-4 weeks out from ordering a model 3. I just dont see anything that can compete with it as a DD and an accessory to the LX.

i4 is just not it, and and im not going to go model s / eqs price range either. Not for a car i will just abuse almost daily i traffic over greater Houston.

Used prices make zero sense, which i truly don’t get. I might actually just lease it through my business.

Advice (validation) please? Lol

I was going to say ball out and get something from the E-Tron line lol. But if you’re just looking to use and abuse the Tesla is probably better for it.

Yes, the model 3 is the perfect stablemate to any cruiser. Great way to offset the fuel/maintenance costs. Since it sounds like you may be a business owner, they're also a great tax cheat if you are able to write off your mileage. I'm approaching 4 years/80k miles in my 3 and no mechanical issues to date. Not to say it's the perfect car, but it's definitely still the best bang/$ daily commuter, despite many new options on the market. I'd also look into the mach-e just to check it out. Mine is an early 2019 and has some, shall we say, "refinement" issues, but anything 2021 or newer is a much nicer car. Tesla used market got hosed by the $5k price drop for new cars earlier in the year. Might get a good deal on a used one with some searching around.

Have you considered a hybrid? I’m a fan of the new ES300H. You get that Toyo/Lex build quality and reliability and just a nice, no nonsense car that is comfortable and averages near 40 mpg.

Thanks!

Aside from early build quality (pre 2020-21), it seems solid, and very reliable over 5 years at least. Buying new, battery is warrantied for 8 years too.

This is perfect for what im looking for. A zero maintenance, low operating cost DD, that i can avoid getting sentimental or obsessive about, that will get me a completely unconcerned 6 years. Or 3 under lease (fully written off), and no need to do asset depreciation schedule. A lease does make sense as well since the product is highly iterative, and nothing like an LC lol. Getting out 3 years there will certainly be features i want.

I have actually thought about this but since I care about performance and fun, given the lack of it in the LX, anything Lexus is pretty much out. Too sloppy, too conservative, and not what im looking for. They will be extremely dated as well, even brand new.

Considering performance (mainly straight line) I have a hard time coming up with anything remotely close around $50k.

Im kind of playing into all the EV strengths, and i have the 200 for everything else.
