Would you trade in your Land Cruiser for a Rivian R1S/R1T?

EV just doesn't work for me as a replacement for our LX because it's our long road tripper. But my brother just got an R1S and we'll be posting some long form video on it soon. It's an impressive vehicle.

The desire is there. Jeep E Wrangler sold more than many units in 2 years but getting recalled because they just stop moving.

Not sure where to put this but the HUMMER EV is an expensive trash can….

Poor build quality seems to be the norm for EVs….
It's interesting that brands I already thought were crap, put out crap; while brands like Hyundai, Toyota, and Audi are making really well thought out and well built ones.

Gm makes janky cars. Tesla's build quality is in the pooper. Ford is meh. Jeeps have been doo-doo for a minute now.

Yeah. American junk.

Well, we have one on the schedule to be built fall 2024 according to an email I received a few weeks ago. My wife is the one who really wants it. I‘m sure she‘ll be ready to sell it 3mo after owning it and can at least get our money back if not more. That’s if she even wants it by then. I personally think they are cool but it stops there. I cant stand GM products. The only thing they’ve done really well, is the Super Cruise. It‘s much smoother system than Tesla currently. It’s almost worth buy an Escalade for but after hearing some negative ownership experience, I’ll pass. Hopefully Lexus brings out a much upgraded GX as I‘d prefer her to own one of those instead.

I would absolutely not include Hyundai in that group. Initial quality is high, but they haven’t even figured out how to coat trim or paint windshield wiper arms in a way that tolerates UV. My friend had one of their compact cars and a sensor within the transmission died at about 70k, which they refused to fix under warranty.

If you’re only keeping it two years and selling, ok. But they aren’t anywhere near the level of Toyota, Honda, VW in terms of long term quality.

Well, i would not put Hyundai on the same plane as Toyota and Honda.

See:

Hyundai may look pretty and high quality on the surface (and it is), but underneath, it is pretty much trash mechanically with odd decision making. Lots of corner cut…even on their highest end and newest 2023 Palisade.

(For me, i put Audi and VW in similar category as pretty on top, mediocre underneath.)

Here are thoughts on it. Probably the longest review we've ever done

I can for sure concede that Hyundai isn't on the same level as Toyota and such, but it would be disingenuous to place them with GM.

Watch the video i posted. It is pretty sh!tty IMHO. Very pretty and high Q on surface. Underneath, it is a sh!t-show. It is using GM/Ford philosophy to the max.

I wouldn’t buy this for two reasons alone, lack of Apple CarPlay and having to adjust vents through nav screen. That would get old real fast. It has lots of great features but I just don’t want to control everything through a screen.

Random Q…does the touchscreen work with gloves on?

I can’t defend this design decision but in practice the vent adjustment has been a non issue on our model 3. The position is stored with driver profile and I don’t think I’ve ever adjusted them after setting on day one.

Definitely would prefer a dang knob on the vent though.

Yeah physical buttons in cars isn't the same as physical buttons in phones. It's really a safety issue. Stuff you will want to adjust while driving should be accessable by feel/muscle memory alone.

That's really more in reference to radio stuff though.

I love the body of the R1S, very reminiscent of the new Wagoneer, but I hate the front end. I noticed some panel gap misalignment in a few areas on the video, very Tesla of them.

These would also be great questions for the comment section. Youtube algorithm loves comments. We'll try do a follow up video to address them.

Hyundai and Kia engines are 100k disposables.

I think Jeep had to of been inspired heavily- “stole” in their design from Rivian.
