Rivian R1S vs LC thoughts?

Would you trade in your Land Cruiser for a Rivian R1S/R1T?

My typical overnight home charge range goes down about 17% miles in sub-zero temps, so I can only drive 200 miles that day instead of 240. Still far more than necessary for my normal day of work and errands. Still enough to get me to the next state and back home. Charge time is the same as normal as far as I can tell, but I sleep through it anyway.

I feel that there's a lot of confirmation bias when viewing EV anecdotes. Some may read the above and feel that this categorically makes EV's flawed or inadequate. Yet they'll let the ICE idle in the driveway for 15 minutes to warm up, also reducing range. The former is interpreted as a huge flaw, the latter as business as usual.

Neither solution is perfect and for the time, neither solution fits everyone's needs.

Apart from remote travel range concerns, I think the biggest issue to the offroader is how the current direct-drive EV's can't smoothly climb an obstacle.

^ Well said.

Saw lots of EVs roaming Tahoe through major snow storms. The launch green R1Ts look especially sharp.

Who idles for 15 min?!! Isn’t the recommendation is to drive off almost immediately?

But…the difference is that there is a gas station at every corner…and gassing a car to full takes 5-10 min max. You can’t say the same for EVs.

Agree, I’ll idle for 3mins in really cold temps but otherwise as soon as the startup sound of the engine settles down and then I head off. I’ve never known anyone to idle past maybe 5mins even when I was a kid living in Tahoe. My Dad idled his Cherokee for maybe 5mins to get it warmed up enough to not freeze to death when we got in. That was like 30yrs. ago.

a massive number of people up here idle for 10-15 min all winter, I fell like they hand out auto starts as a welcome to AK gift. When it gets below —15 F or so many people just leave their trucks running when they go inside stores/restaurants/…. Part of the reason the air quality goes to crap in Fairbanks when it gets in the -20’s and below.

My 2 cents, EV ( Tesla Y & X ) both new, make plenty of noise when the cooling fan is on , its loud. An EV crawler ? Should it be incorporated into the drive train in place of motor or set up as direct drive each wheel/axle with no gears ? Two very different situations with different things to overcome. As far as battery perf/life I will say in my experience thay are like any other battery, some great, some degrade more rapidly, supercharging degrades them at a faster rate. And I have not seen any discussion on how surge effects the batt, let me tell you first hand that surge or mashing the pedal will drawn down the batt like a MF. In fact IIRC at 30% OR LESS THE CAR WONT LET YOU " MASH THE THROTTLE", it meters the input to preserve batt, while crawling the surge situations will be numerous and heavy loads so batt life in a crawler may be suspect.

Wonder how this thing will do off-road.
Munro MK1
Solid axles
Triple locked
2 speed transfercase
325 hp/516ftlb electric motor

Why does every EV have to look like a 4-year old drew it in MS Paint?

In alaska i idle as long as it takes to warm up the cabin and defrost the windshield. Call me a wimp.

You may already know this but do you crack your heater to the Hi setting? My cabin warms up really fast. It was 3f and my cabin was warm in 5mins. I think it’s the emergency heating system our LC’s have.

I think a lot of the conversations I have around EV's are... totally based in politicized misinformation. I live in a state where the majority of power is sourced from nuclear power plants; but I constantly hear "you know that electricity just comes from coal" (coal makes up 4 percent of our power output) or "I hear they are way more dangerous than gas cars". It's a weird experience. I want a car that can serve as a battery backup for my house. That concept is cool as ****, but I get s*** on by family members because they watch too much TV telling them that electric cars need to replace tractors and we wont be able to use gas in the next 5 years.

Buy Ford F150 Hybrid…now THAT is a “backup” for my house that i can use! (Of course, F150h is also one of the most unreliable vehicle! :( )

I never understand why people want their EV to be the backup to their house. What happens when you drain the EV battery? What will you do to get help? How will you go and get more food/batteries? Your EV is now a paper-weight.

F150h is way more useful.

I have a pretty intense generator and solar panels. I can easily charge my car using both indefinitely. I think anti EV people forget... I drive a car that gets 15 mpg, and I have 3 of them... I'm not anti gas. I just want redundant systems help me weather absurd outages; that also drive me around town with off peak energy (basically 5 dollars to fill up my car with electric juice). Plus the power is sourced from a nuclear power plant. Its a win win.
A back up house battery would be cool too, but I can't drive it.

It was -46F when I picked up the kids from college for Christmas. But yeah, i know of that heater.

You win! Thats‘s just insane. the coldest I’ve exper was -30f. -46f is next level

I was born in Fairbanks, had to walk backwards to get to school sometimes. I now live in a hot desert. 🙂
