On a more serious note, we know about the famous Sound Deadener Showdown

Anybody know of such a comparison to test the various professional and DIY bedliner products, side by side, and over time?

I am especially interested to see how the new Dead Liner (from Second Skin, though only available in black) will compare to Durabak. But I am also considering Rhinoliner and ArmorThane, among others...

Jeep ZJ's have solid front axles, including the one pictured.......

The Dead Liner should be the next best thing since sliced bread. I still haven't seen it applied to the exterior of a truck yet though.

I stand corrected. I didn't even look. I could have sworn... Ok, they have at least that going for them.

For the record, without comparing them, I have no problem with Jeeps, I even owned a Cherokee Laredo and loved it (for the most part).
I would also be proud to drive a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon EV, and yes, they apparently are going to offer that package. I just wish it were a diesel hybrid not gas hybrid.

That D30 isn't much better than an IFS though. My buddy used to have one before I made him buy an 80 and he blew the u-joints in it 3 times in 18 months.

He likes his 80 much better.

Here's the formula breakdowns:

DIY:
Durabak/Herculiner: identical products, except the Durabak comes in colors and you can opt for a UV protector in the formula, and it also comes in a grit-free smooth version. Polyurethane.
Hippoliner: Urethane paste.
Gator Guard: (made by the same company as Hippo) Epoxy/Urethane blend.
U-pol Raptor: urethane, in tintable and black.
Second Skin Bedliner: Reformulating their product.
Duplicolor: vinyl polymer.
Scorpion: Polyurethane.


Professional install:
Rhinoliner: polyurethane/polyurea elastomer.
Armorthane: polyurethane/polyurea.
Line-X: polyurethane/polyurea.
GatorHyde: various polyurea blends.

Dupli-Color is the one in the spray can, I used Durabak for mine, good number of colors to choose from and you can get it textured or smooth.

hey cool stuff, thanks for all the info on this guys. I need to redo all the paint on my 62 or it will die and this is looking like a good option. Has anyone ever done a whole truck? I like what you've all done with just the bottom half like that, but my roof tends to take a beating from the various heavy uses my roof rack sees on a constant basis, so I figured it might be best to do the whole thing. So it appears that there is no good smooth finish option for this type of stuff? I like it but I wonder how much the textured finish hurts fuel economy...

Is this a serious quote? If it really is I doubt it would hurt it by more than .5 mpg. Remember we drive Landcruisers.

Haha yes it was serious! I've heard it said that just not washing your car can hurt fuel economy. Changing the entire surface area to a bumpy, pitted surface I imagine would have more of an effect.

On the "remember we drive landcruisers" part... well my BJ60 goes noticeably slower when I open the window due to wind resistance. Not a LOT slower, but it is noticeable.

Any engineers out there care to settle this?

Opening the large windows and having textured paint on a truck can't provide the same amount of wind resistance, or even close to the same amount. Rhino lining or whatever would probably have a minimal effect on fuel efficiency.

If you want to get some really good MPG's, dump the roof racks, large front bull bars, large rear bumpers, wide tires, etc. No need to split hairs with this.

Hmmm good point. I still would be interested to find out how much effect it does have... I mean that's a lot of surface area, it might be one of those things where we're all like "it can't have much effect" but then really science surprises us and it like cuts fuel economy IN HALF!! Yeah ok you're probably right though.

The difference would be insignificant. The variance in mileage from one tank to the next based on slightly different trips and driving habits would more than offset any loss in aerodynamic-related efficiency. We are, after all, talking about rolling bricks...
