Rhino lining the body of a 60

Can you run the rhino lining, or whatever you decide to use, along the body over these rust bumps and help prevent them from spreading? Would you have to get up under the wheelwell to prevent moisture from continually getting up behind the paint?

Any bedliner-like coating would flake off, with a quickness, if put over that bubbling. Rustbullet, POR, Zerorust, etc would last only a little longer. Any top coat relies on the adhesion of each preceeding base coat, so loose rust is out, even for quality coatings. Now, if ya were to get that area down to SOLID rust and/or bare metal, then we can talk.
Herc, Rhinolinings and the like aren't ideal choices for longterm solutions even on solid rusted areas. Better to use something intended to encapsulate the rust, then top coat as you wish if ya need to.
As I've heard preached everywhere, the PREP work is what makes or breaks any paint job.

Can you send me a pic of the front so I can see the line you followed?

yes but give me a few days. I am working on it right now.

When did people remove the masking? I have 2 coats on which is hercs recommended amount but I think I'm going to do 3 since I can still see red in a few spots. So should I remove the tape as soon as I am done with the 3rd coat or wait a little while?

Tom you never posted finished pictures, I'm interested to see what your grille looks like with the smooth durabak.

In 30 deg temps, I pulled my masking tape off after about 30-45 min.
Just enough for the glaze to be set.
I used Hippo liner and took the high line and LOVE it! Used the roller and about 3/4 of the kit that I got for 85.00. IMO it was a bargain. IIve got 4-5 coats, so its nice an thick.
Heres a shot of mine!
Its DE woodied now, but you get the general idea.

Damn, that rig's lookin' tough, Chicago!

...Just picked up my very own jack, jackstands, and ordered everything else I was missing for my lift (pins, steering stabilizer, shims, etc.).... So the tan public nuisance at 2415 Spring Flower Dr. is about to become public enemy number one. :D ...I'll let you know when I'm gonna do the lift.

Green..

man, the 60s look sweet with the lining. The wood "paneling" is awesome...

I think can speak to the longevity of Herculiner at least...
I did it myself, used 3 gallons, rollers and brushes, did the whole exterior, took all weekend.
Finished it just in time for West coast Pigrun #2. Forget exactly what year that was, but it's been 5 or 6 years now....
The Herc is definitely "thinning" and allowing the original paint to show through. Assume this is the UV damage we've heard about. Happening more on the driver side, which gets more sun where I park. The Rig has never been garaged, or even washed, in the last 5 or 6 years.
I'm planning on re-painting it any day now...should have done it a year or two ago when I first noticed it.
So, I can say that a user-applied coat or 2 of Herculiner will last 3 or 4 years easily.
I don't take pics of my own rig, I rely on the kindness of passengers. Here's a shot at SnT '07, notice thinning herc near front of hood and drivers side door especially.

Lots of bedliner exterior shots floating around, but few say what product they used and how old it is in those photos. Kind of important info for those of us trying to decide on a product. Without photos, I think the recommendations/experiences are biased and not particularly useful.

did you remove all the headlights and surrounding plastics or did you just tape over it? removing it seems safer but wouldnt it be all weird putting it back on?

Yes, I removed all the trim pieces.
I havent done the front valence YET....Ill do that when I make a decision on what engine route Im going.
I wasnt sure how the pieces would go back together with the liner on, but they did just fine.

Has anyone done a whole truck in a linex like material that is tinted to factory colors?

Do that and the cruiser gods will exact their toll on your mortal soul. That's the same kind of thing that the 40-series guys hate so much, only they see it with those s***ty rear corner diamond place rot hiders. A sin, I tells ya.

I would take care of the rust before you put anything over it.

Amen.

Thanks bro. I wondered if anyone would ever jump on that request. I like it, but would go drab olive, not shiny emerald. That looks like painted toenails on a sweaty 300 lb. hairy woman.

I've settled on this approach:

Dark or light gray Durabak 18 (uv) smooth or textured (undecided) for the entire interior floor and cargo panels.
Black Durabak 18 (rough or smooth) exterior similar to JoeCanadian's, and dark gray (possibly a different color) Durabak 18 on the remainder of the exterior.

My paint job is fubar'd from sun damage and acidic bird s***.

that would be cool but $$$. I checked with line-x here to see about having my roof sprayed white and they wanted $600 because they would have to purge the lines and spray. I may see what it would cost because i will need a paint job in the future.
