Cross post from the 70s thread.

I've been at the DMV and CHP several times over the past few weeks trying to get a couple of vehicles VIN verified, TT&L... Not for a RHD rig.

But the CHP officer tells me that by 2020 no RHD vehicle will be allowed to be titled or registered in California. Not only are they spending too much time on title/import tracking and validations, they are seeing a significant increase in MV incidents involving RHD vehicles.

Has anyone else heard of this down the CA pike? I was looking to acquire a 70 and a Patrol but... I may have to act quicker or look at @RMP&O for LHD imports.

I'm repeating exactly what I was told.

Welcome to the CA DMV. Want a miserable life? Bring a RHD over here. It doesn't really matter if it's technically legal or not. It will be a red flag every time you've got to renew the registration each year. Foreign non USA vehicles here are seen as alien invaders that must be exterminated. A RHD 70 is CA is just about as evil and forbidden as an old Land Rover Defender. The CA DMV is nothing to be trifled with. If they say no, or don't know, take that as a no- even if they're wrong. Bringing a legally complex vehicle into CA is just asking for it.

I've learned that their mood dictates everything. I've had the same person three times and two others and they are all different. The person I've seen 3 times acts like they've never seen me before even though I wrote down her name and ID....

Reminds me of ............

And slowly our freedoms are being eroded. TX just passed a law not allowing Dune Buggies or Sand Rails. They are even revoking previously issued titles, hot rods are next on their list as "unsafe". California is probably too deeply entrenched but in other states get involved before it's too late. Rant over.

Would this just make their heads explode..?

Off topic but I love telling the story. 25 years ago I worked at Ford corporate in a technical historical research role (I guess.) Got a call from an elderly woman in California. Original owner of a 1966 Mustang. She was literally in tears. She failed emissions inspection because her smog pump was missing. They accused her of modifying the vehicle.

She swore up and down she never modified the vehicle (why would she?) According to the records her car was built with a smog pump. I guessed that she probably took it in for an oil change and someone swiped the pump due to it's value in the California environment. I wrote a letter to the Cali DMV stating that in fact her car was not originally equipped with a smog pump to allow her to get tags.

Every place has got it's good and bad but from our point of view back here California wants every one (nationwide) riding a solar powered Hyperloop - except that the sun almost never shines here.

no RHD's in CA? does that mean that you won't have any mail service after? all there rigs are RHD

Sounds like that cop needs to focus more on stopping transportation of drugs and violent gang activities rather than what the heck harmless stuff rhd vehicles do.

He was doing his assigned job. He is the full time VIN inspector officer for the CHP and DMV. Still a full uniformed officer, just not a true "Chipper"; patrolling etc...

If its true and it goes into affect... any new title.... Not sure? It won't apply to 1000s of vehicles. I'm sure they'll make a concession for a few entities, including the trash men. They have two steering wheels, so technically it could still be considered LHD.....

You would think cops would love rhd vehicles. They can comfortably stand on the shoulder rather than in a traffic lane when in a traffic stop.

"Hey man, take that common sense and leave" - Everyone in California apparently

Try a small town in DMV in CA...
I'm used to left-coast Santa Cruz,CA DMV's and went to a small town DMV in Quincy, CA.
World of difference, All the employees there sounded friendly and they were actually helpful, took their time trying to help me out with a registration issue.
You could also ask Jonathan Ward what they do from ICON4x4 • HAND MADE IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
He is usually pretty helpful

forgot about trash trucks, also street sweepers and probably lots more

It really won't matter when they finally outlaw ALL traditional vehicles and we all will be forced into self-driving cars with NO steering wheel on either side ! Bring back Ah-nold and his Humvee !

yea that would be awesome to not live in a smog city.. Its just inconvenient once a year for me just did it the other day actually in an out no big deal.

I think it took maybe 1 hour to do my initial registration and get a VIN.
