So let me see if I can figure this out. Hopefully, you guys can help. I have a right Hand drive HJ 45 with 3b. I have a 60 ps gear box. I busted the relay rod and had to patch it up to get out of the mountains. Don’t make fun of my portable weld job. Anyway it seems my relay rod was possibly made by torfab back in the day with 60 tre on one end and 40 on the other. Any suggestions on how to approach/fix this now? With busted relay rod I assume I should replace drag link and all tre as well. Thanks for advice/help

You can see in the last pic where it looks like it was welded from 60 to 40 relay rod. My steering has been phenomenal until I hit a huge rock and ripped the relay rod into two pieces so I don’t mind this setup but I am open to suggestions.

Do you want to replace it, or upgrade it?

Pretty sure the custom relay rod I had on here was about 29.5” long. 19mm socket on pitman arm and 17mm on the other side.

honestly the steering has been awesome with this setup and no complaints but now that a boulder took out the relay rod I’m second guessing it.

I make exactly what you need. I just sold my last one (I think to @Cactus Camper ?) but am about to do another run of 5.

They are made from 1.25” DOM, and include jam nuts for both sides. Both does have flats machined for easy adjustment.

You won't break this. :D

I think 4plus products sells some adapter sleeves so you can make custom length or upgraded steering rods. See post #5 here:

This would allow for use of 80 series TRE at the pitman arm to work in conjunction with a larger diameter custom relay rod:

Do you have any idea if you have large pattern or small pattern knuckles on that front axle? Cruiser Matt, as posted above, can probably get you a whole new turn key setup that will move the weak link elsewhere :) ie. check your knuckle stud nut torque regularly after upgrading steering components.

He doesn't have a 60 pitman arm. He has a RHD 80 pitman arm. Which is what I make my custom drag link for (FJ80 joint on one side, FJ40 on the other)

Matt’s setup is probably going to be the most durable and certain to work—go for that one.

I know some folks have used 70 series intermediate shafts but I think you have the wrong knuckle pattern to run the 60 series steering arms with a wider taper that would fit the TRE/drag link end combo needed for the 70 series set up.

At risk of a hijack, what are you running from your column to PS box? Are you using a custom shaft/joints? Could you post pics if you’re willing and able?

Cheers,

- Sawyer

Sawyer I have everything for the column side as well if you need.

Got your voicemail Chad. Looks like you’re covered. Way too esoteric for me. 😉

@wileycoyote Please post up some pictures when you get the parts installed! :)
