Hey y'all, my water pump recently started leaking after I did a coolant flush. I ordered the parts to replace the water pump, timing belt, alternator belts and turbo water hose. Anything else that people would recommend that I replace while doing this job? Also, can anyone point me to a nice step-by-step instruction on how to go about this job? I've never done this before so preferably something that is easy to understand. Thanks!

Where did you get the parts from? I'm in Calgary and have to replace my water pump. Thought I'd do the timing belt and idler pulley at the same time but can't find parts locally.

I'm doing this all now as well. I'm also doing radiator, radiator hoses, cam seal, AC pulley (mine is squeaking), valve cover gasket, power steering lines and reservoir (mine is leaking).....
Usually you'll do the belt tensioner pulley assembly and spring when doing the timing belt.
The above video is great and so is the FSM. I got most of my parts from @beno.
Have fun!

I can get you parts, I am in Calgary as well. Sending you a PM...

If you haven't got a copy of the FSM, first step is to get one - @serenity 's link should get you what you need.

X2 on doing the thermostat and tensioner pulley and spring. Have the Big ends been replaced?

Finished the job this weekend. Not too difficult. Took me about 6 hours from start to finish. Surprisingly the water pump from Onlineautoparts has a metal impeller and looks and feels as good as the Toyota OEM one. The kit came with a new tensioner pully, spring, camshaft seal, timing belt, new studs for the fan, and the water pump. All for $150 CDN shipping included.

Never even thought of doing the thermostat. That should be an easy replacement anytime. Do you need to take the timing cover off to change it?

I have not done the crank bearings yet. The truck just rolled 450,000 kliks recently. Not sure if I'll bother or not.

Question on the timing belt change. Before removing the timing belt, I ensure I was lined up on both the timing gear and injection pump. When I was removing the timing gear, the wrench I had on the cam gear slipped and I moved the timing gear about 2 inches from where it was set. As long as move it back to the correct mark before I reassamble am I ok? Thanks! My first shot at this job...

Yep, , I guess you turned it back in the opposite direction to the direction in which you rotated it, so it should be in the same place. My sanity check was always to turn the engine by hand a few revolutions once it was all buttoned up, but before refitting the cover, to make sure the lines came back to the right place. The FSM suggests doing this

Good advice thanks. Just to clarify, once it's buttoned up, manually turn the engine and ensure both the marks line up each revolution?

I'm really struggling to get the 17mm bolt off the gear....it is stuck tight. I haven't hit it with heat yet because I was worried about the rubber gasket. I need to remove because I'm doing a water pump. Anyone have any tricks?

Assuming this is the camshaft gear?
Stop the cam rotating with a wrench, and use a rattle gun/ impact driver to undo the bolt

Yup the camshaft gear. I have been using a crescent wrench and breaker bar as pictured in the FSM and the PowerMods video posted a few posts back. I bought a brand new crescent and the bolt was stuck enough that with a breaker bar I could spread the jaws of the crescent wrench....maybe I need to get a refund from Craftsman! I actually just bought an impact driver and will try than once I have an adapter. This thing on on there! Any downside to hitting with some heat?

I would try rattle gun before heat.
The percussion from a rattle gun will break a lot of stuff loose that you can't shift with a breather bar.

Try and use single hex sockets with rattle gun if you have them.

Heat just needs extra care so you don't cook anything unintentionally

Yep, I'll try and find the FSM for you, got it here somewhere

Worked in 4 seconds...glad I picked that thing up!

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this. I got my parts from Radd Cruisers.
