While getting finishing up on engine installation, decided to address broken stud on right rear hub. I've had the replacement stud for 5 years.

While removing the tire, a second stud twisted off. Glad I purchase 2 - 5 years ago.

Yes, you can remove them without taking the hub off the truck. Use precision equipment to complete the task. (Translate-big hammer).

The new studs will fit between the hub and e-brake easily.

I used an oversized nut, a washer and lug nut to pull the stud through. I was careful to center the nut to avoid damaging the stud's threads. The lug nut is reversed to face the flat surface to the washer. Otherwise the taper would have pushed through the washer.

The challenge seems to prevent the hub from turning when tightening down on the nut. Also, the stud doesn't want to go that last 1/16 of an inch. Working that part. Should be able to install tire, take truck off jack stands and pull them up flush. We'll see.

just did this.
I cut a piece of garden hose, slipped it over one of the studs, then I had a long pry bar wedge it between the "hosed" stud and the ground to lock off. Sucked up that last bit.

Nice write up and photos, thanks.

Thanks Hardy. Just happen to have an expendable garden hose laying outside my shop.

Thanksgiving at an auto parts store, now that's a man's way to give thanks.
