I bent up my rear DS and will be replacing it with a spare that I have(97 80, 120k). I will put new toyo u-joints in it prior to installation but have a few questions. I keep reading that I should mark the DS before removal to keep it in phase but I'll be putting a different shaft on so does this still apply? Also, while inspecting the replacement DS I pulled the slip yolk apart without marking its orientation first (I was tired). Can I just line it up in the same orientation as my old DS and be ok? What's the best way to put the replacement on correctly? I have a fsm but not in front of me. Will it give me direction to replace?
Thanks in advance
Paul

I bet someone will explain in all.
Till then look up
In Phase and Out Of Phase.
Your toyota drive shafts should be installed out of phase. 180 degrees off from one another. Some people have installed them in phase to get rid of vibrations but you should try out of phase first.
That's how they come originally.
As far as the slip yoke I don't think it really matters. Just line up the splines to get it in.
Though take what I say lightly as I'm no expert!

Take it to wenco

It is in the San Fernando valley

I'm taking all three of my spares in next week

They seem to be like brake pads...need to be swapped out every now and then.

Also having some spares for others and myself! Things always go wrong when the stores are closed

I believe rear DS is supposed to be "in phase", front is supposed to be "out of phase".

How do I determine in phase vs out of phase?

In phase is when the U-joint yokes are parallel, end to end; out of phase is when they are perpendicular.

It shows the proper orientation in the FSM.

You'll technically need to get it balanced after the new joints anyway, so it isn't critical to have everything match-marked up perfectly, but if you do mark everything you may get lucky and it not need any adjustment. I use one mark on one end, and two on the other, to keep track of which end goes with which. I personally don't think indexing the shaft to the flanges is necessary, even though it is described in the FSM.

Also when you press in the cap then install the snapring, press it back lightly the other way to seat the snapring firmly against that face. A couple thousandths gap is enough to throw off the balance.

There is a lot more in the FSM but the top of this page at least shows that if the yokes are lined up and the grease zerks all pointing to the same side of the shaft, it is indexed as it came from the factory.

Surfpig and vbcrush are correct on the phasing.

Don't give up on the bent shaft. They can almost always be re-tubed and good as new.

Also don't think you necessarily will new new u-joints. I'd grease them up and run them. They will likely be fine.

Thanks guys. I'll pull out the fsm when I get home. Drew...ill keep the bent up shaft as a spare anyway and see if I can get it made right.

Don't take what I say at all!
I learned a few things today. Thanks to all that spread good info.
