My 84 FJ60 conked out on the expressway this weekend and since we were already late I had to just have it towed to the dealership. Turns out it needs a new fuel pump.

Are these hard to install for a relative newbie? I bought this LC so I could slowly learn to do the lower level stuff myself.

The dealership wants $317 parts and labor (includes $85 for the diagnostic already done).

I am more curious than anything since I will probably just have them get it done for convenience (and to avoid spending more $$ on towing).

Thanks for any input.

BTW, the good news is after two hours reading the archives, I diagnosed the problem myself. That makes me feel all warm inside...

This was the first two things I did on my 60. Once on the side of the road while driving it home after buying it. The second time was once I got home I replaced it with a Toyota one. It is really strightforward nothing more then a couple of bolts and some hoses. Do forget the spacer!

I sure "SJ" means DON'T FORGET THE SPACER. Obvious typo..I also used some blue gasket sealer between all the layers, someone suggested it..it's never leaked...might not have anyway..

easy un-bolt/re-bolt job..

It's about a 30 minute job, if you take your time, including washing your hands afterwords. One bananna.

fuel pump

before swapping out my engine i needed to replace my fuel pump inorder to get it to pass emissions in WA... ordered the pump from CCOT and installed in an hour. easy repair. cost about $70 with shipping as I recall. two hoses, two bolts (and don't forget the spacer)

Ditto. I ordered one from MAF and it took a couple hours cuz my spacer cracked as I was scraping off the old gaskets. I was told I didn't need to use any gasket sealer. I had some problems with the bolts staying threaded through the double gaskets, but it worked out eventually- this from a relative rookie.

save some money, order a Carter fuel pump for a fj60, inside will be(or it was the case in the past) a OEM fuel pump, it will(or should) come with the spacer, cost is 1/2 of the dealer price.

easy to swap

i replaced my pump and did not hear about a spacer- what is it for and should i get one on a pump that has been on for a couple thousand miles?

The spacer is important. The fuel pump will work for awhile w/out the spacer, but eventually the pump will fail w/out it. The spacer is about 1/4" thick, and goes between the pump and the block.

Where can you specifically order the Carter pump? Online or at a shop?

thanks Pimp!

Pimp I was looking at my old fuel pump that came in a Carter box and its actually made in Japan by a Japanese company
Its only done 30000klms and works great:grinpump::grinpimp:

easy, just watch out for the squirt of gas if it is compressed, midpump that is.
