Replacement carpet kits

There are only a couple of threads that discuss replacement carpet and no opinions (that I could find) on experienice with vendors, quality, etc. So anyone have any good or bad experiences that they would like to share?

If you go to the vendor link in the FAQ, you can get replacement carpet (for an 85 4Runner) for less than $300 and for an additional $100 or so you can get a "mass backing" option which is an additional 40mm sound deadening on the carpet backing. They say that their carpets are sourced from the "world famous ACC (Auto Custom Carpets). If you go to ACC and order online then that carpet kit costs just under $500 and the mass backing option adds another $230. Here is ACC's website: Auto Custom Carpets, Inc - Search

I've also found other vendors that will supply what appears to be the same product for about the same price as the link in the FAQ: Auto Carpet Direct - The Internet's Largest Dealer of Automotive Carpet (no mass backing option as far as I can tell), 84-89 Toyota 4Runner Carpet Complete Kit 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 ($235 for carpet and $109 for mass backing).

Well as you can see, there are a few options. Again, any experiences, good or bad, would be nice to know before we order. 4Runner is going into the paint shop on Monday and will be there about 2 weeks or so. We've stripped the interior in the meantime so I would like to have something to go back in when we get the 4Runner back.

FWIW, we are removing the original vinyl which is in pretty bad shape. We have debated carpet or vinyl and have decided to go back with carpet.

thanks for this write up , I need new carpeting myself, brown carpet for my 85 4runner , but I haven't sprung for it yet in fear that the color wont match or wont fit right.. what color is your interior WarDamnEagle ? and please keep use posted with your opinion on if the color matches and fit and finish etc.

I found carpet at JC Whitney for my 92 pickup, not sure on the 4-runner but worth a look.

No experience with them, I was just looking.

i would like a nice, MOLDED, carpet replacement, with finished edges, that looks as good as factory. not some junk off a roll that you have to cut yourself or has unfinished edges.

if anybody finds something good, please post it up

I have brown and tan interior. The best carpet color and I think the OEM color for that color interior is Saddle. It appears to be color code 820 on most of these sites.

It's no problem to buy the carpet molded but they are all a little large and none of them will have the cutouts. You will have to cut the cutouts and edges to fit. I don't see any problem with unfinished edges for cut-pile carpet as all of the edges will go underneath a trim piece (except at the top of the firewall).

not sure if you're interested in vinyl but i remember a few years back i saw molded vinyl carpet replacement, came in different colors (red, black, grey, not sure about brown).

nice thing is you could still wipe it down with a damp cloth to get mud/dirt out and it should still dampen road noise (unlike removing carpet and just rhino lining).

I put carpet from a second gen 4runner in my 86. Some of the holes didn't line up and there are a couple wrinkles, but other than that it looks good. Mine was free

Well I ordered from the link in the FAQ: Correctly Molded Toyota Carpet--Replacment Toyota Carpet--800-780-2974

Carpet showed up in 3 days via UPS. I went with the 40mm "mass backing" option and the total delivered price was just under $375. The carpet was shipped directly from ACC in Anniston, Alabama. I have checked the carpet specs and this is the same carpet and mass backing that costs over $700 direct from their website.

I'm pretty satisfied with the quality. Here are a few pics. Can't install until the 4Runner gets back from the paint shop.

Chose "camel" which was the only suggested OEM color that was brown (or brownish). It looks a little light, dending on the angle, but I think it will appear a bit darker installed.

i agree it looks a little light, but that wont matter i think since it will all be the same color. it would be different if you were only replacing half. you wont be able to tell once its installed i think.


also, it appears that the section that goes on the back of the rear seats is attached to the cargo area carpet. correct? mine is detached. is that factory and has mine been replaced, or is that something the carpet manufacturer did?

i kind of like it if it fits. my carpet always seems to wiggle around back there cause the front of it isnt secured to anything...interesting. do yo think it will wad up right in the crease at the bottom of the seats when you fold them up, since its all once piece?

can u post up some closer pics of the "pile" for comparison, as well as a shot of the edges? like how good it was cut?

Yes, the cargo area carpet attaches to the back of the rear seats as one piece. I put some SR5 rear seats in this 4Runner a few years ago and you can see them in one of the photos. I don't know how that's going to work. We had an 86 SR5 4Runner once upon a time but I don't recall how that carpet worked so no idea what the OEM configuration was. If it doesn't work out very well then I can always cut it and make it 2 pieces.

I tried to show the pile in pic number 3 but here are two more pics showing the finished edges and the heel pad. I dont know if the heel pad is glued in or not but it appears to be very well attached (like seamless) and very tough.

The rear cargo carpet sounds similar to my FJ60. The cargo carpet runs the whole length of the back and up the back of the rear seat. That way when you fold it down there is no crack and it is one nice piece. The fold on the FJ60 does not bunch up but slip down in a small crease between seat and bed. This also keeps it from slipping around.

If yours is like mine it should be fine as a one piece.

Ever been carpet shopping for your home?

Ever notice carpet will look different in different lights as well as from different angles?

Take the carpet and spin it 180-degrees and look at it again, I'll bet it blends a little better.

Take it outside, or lay it in the front room entry and have a kegger this coming weekend. It'll give it about 10 years worth of wear in 2 days and once matted down it'll blend with everything else perfectly.(?)

In anticipation of getting the 4Runner back from the paint shop sometime in the next couple of weeks, I have a question for anyone with carpet in their 4Runner.

Where things bolt down through the carpet that you really want to be pulled tight (I'm thinking the seats, seatbelts, and rollbar in particular), is the carpet cut around the area so that you get metal to metal contact on the entire bearing surface or is there just a hole in the carpet with the bearing surface (e.g. seat foot) crushed against the carpet?

i would guess mine is factory.
and i have had all my seats and crap out.
mine just has a small hole for the bolt to pass through. its a little over sized so the threads dont get caught in the...threads (lol if that makes sense)

but ultimately the components have a fabric layer sandwiched between them and the sheet metal floor.

I think this is true for the seats, but not the seatbelt buckles. The bolts are sleeved where they attach to the floor on the center hump.

Thanks guys. The front shoulder belts bolt to the floor just behind the seats. It looks like you could bolt through a hole in the carpet or just cut a slot for the bottom part of the mounting tab. Of course if you do that the slot would have to be large enough to allow you to put a wrench on the bolt. Maybe I'll just bolt through everywhere.

Bryan, what about the rollbar? Does the carpet go over the mounting plates or is it underneath?

carpet does not go under roll bar mounts.

is your kit not trimmed out for everything??

seems like to me leaving as much carpet as you can underneath bolting points would be best. it would help to hold it in place.
i know my original carpet has shrunk over the years and the velcro stirps that attach it all together are all pretty weak. so sometimes it wanders around . especially in the back cargo area if i try and drag something around.

a good clamp force from a bolted connection seems like more reassurance that it wont go anywhere to me.

i dont think it would hurt anything. with the exception of seat belt connections..maybe.
