It's not realy a big deal, but it starting to be a biot annoying. I have a bit of blue smoke and it takes a few seconds before all 4 cylinders working properly. When I replaced the glow plugs, I've found a bit of oil at the tip of the second glow plug. The engine has only 198Km on it. Do you guys think that it's possible to replace the valve seals without pulling the head off?

Thanks,
Alex

yep, it can be done and if the valve falls inside you can still pull the head...
i would pull the head and do it right but i have done it the other way too...
cheers

We made a little gismo that fits into the glow plug hole and used compressed air to keep the valves in place...

Worked well

i've done the same

pull each plug per cyl.and just do those seals, then move to the next. works pretty good.

On a gasoline engine, you can thread a piece of rope into the cylinder, turn it over by hand until the valves are held up by the rope. When you are done, just pull the rope back out. I haven't really looked to see if spark plugs are in a different location than glow plugs.

Brad,

Besides the oil seal, should I replace valve springs, retainers or just oil seals? Do you have a part number for an oil seal? Also, do you have picture of the gismo?

I highly doubt that the springs are not within limit. You can at least measure the Free length per FSM EM-54 and or take them to a machine shop and have them spring tested. Do you really think your getting that much oil though the valve seals? Oh.. BTW don't torqe those rocker assembly bolts past 13ft-lb. I broke one.. and luckily it was still poking out of the head and I could get it out.

Wes,

If the oil seals are OK, why i am getting a bit of blue smoke on startup (only when cold) and even after a couple of glow cycles she still runs a just bit rough for 10 - 15 seconds? If I plug her in, I have no problem at all. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Alex

What's your compression on all 4 cylinder Alex?

gb

Greg,

Qestion. Let's say, if one of the cylinders would have a lower compression, I would have a problem starting it all the time. If the truck sits for around 2 or 3 hours after driving, it starts easily without even a trace of blue smoke. It does happen only in mornings after the truck has been parked.
BTW, do i have to disconnect the EDIC rod before doing compression test, right????
