hey fellas. haven't posted in a while; working 60-80 hours a week sucks... but my question is how many of you:

1. have had fuel pressure regulators fail?
2. are replacing them as PM? (such as if you are already taking the fuel rail off for injector work)

just wondering if i really need to tack another $100 on to my parts total. thanks in advance.....

one more thing (sorry still a rook) when i click on the FAQ link a search window pops up; is this different than the regular search function?

you hear about this pretty regular on the 62's, apparently they do go out on 3FE motors like yours haven't heard much about FPR failures in the 1FZ they are a couple years newer so maybe this is in our future.

how much is a fuel pressure gauge? That is the direction I would go, test it and see if it needs to be replaced.

hmmm, FSM huh? that's gonna be a problem. know where i can find one at a decent price?

I have sold a few 1FZ regulators but I do not recall any being replacements for a failed piece. They were all preempetive.

FPRs are prone to fail on a 3FE. A failed FPR will manifest itself with hard starting when hot and can lead to eventual fuel pump check valve failure (replace your fuel pump at this point). It's a 5 minute replacement.

Another few things that get overlooked are the fuel pump pre-filter and the fan clutch. Both of these items have around 100K mile lifespan.

yeah i was planning on replacing the fuel filter since i hear it's easier to do with the intake out of the way. but the fan clutch too huh? i'm gonna have to draw the line somewhere here on parts...
i'm in the process of downloading the manual (thank you nater)....

Jon's talking about the pre-filter "fuel sock" in the gas tank.

Well, for a contrarian opinion:

I think all three of those could wait until symptoms arise IF (and this is a BIG if) you're the type of person who's very observant about such things. (For example, are you the daily driver rather than a spouse or sig. other? Are you an obsessive gauge watcher? Etc...)

At 235k, I'm still on my original fan clutch, fuel filter, and pre-filter. FPR was replaced a while ago as preventative maintenance like you're considering, but looking back I don't think I should have bothered.

Wrong motor again. Your fuel filter is mounted on the right side frame rail. Somewhat of a PITA job to replace, but it's one of those 100K mile items. As for Curtis, yea you can wait till things break, but that's not how I do stuff. You know that to be true ;)

thanks cjf. maybe i'm getting a little ahead of myself with all the PM. i am the only driver (except for my girl after i've been drinkin again)... but i've got my manual all downloaded now so i can do a little more research.... after i get home from work that is. thanks again all.

If it's a Toyota original type fan clutch and is in good mechanical shape, no play in the bearing, the fluid can be changed restoring like new performance.

Depends on how it fails. On the 3FE list about half of those who replaced the fluid wound up replacing the clutch with a new one. On a side note, 100% of those who replaced the fan clutch with aftermarket wound up replacing it again with OEM.

Mine failed around 130K miles and I just replaced it with a new OEM one. My time is worth more to me than the cost savings. Plus I know it'll be good for another 100K miles. I figure after 16 years it really doesn't owe me much. I try to keep that mentality with most things.
