Hello there

Have a 1999 LC 100 1999 with 143 K miles.

Had already 3 coils replaced.

Recently coil # 6 failed. I replaced it with an original coil ( Toyota Lexus ( Denso)) bought from e bag vendor Transglobalauto.

The next day check engine on and coil # 6 is out.

Replaced again by a similar one from same vendor yesterday. Problem solved.
Check engine is back on today

Mechanic tells me defective parts. These are brand new parts.

These were bought at $ 30 each.

Pls advise soonest.

Jay

Not sure thwy have warrantee.

Anything else to look for ?

I bought 8 for $80 on Amazon and there were a few defective coil packs that I had to return.

May be counterfeits (bootleg) coils.
or
Bad Spark plug will cause coil to over heat frying the coil. You would likely see heat damage on coil. But I'd think it would take more than a few miles to fry the coil.
or
Bad or improperly connected coil may over heat.

When to replace Ignition coils.

The coil pack landscape is littered with ill performing chinese (no surprise there ...) ignition coils. I can tell you with almost 100% certainty you didn't get brand new Denso OEM equivalent for $30 ea but rather crapanese fakes.

What brand are the OEM coils? Or what's a good OEM equivalent? I'd rather not pay the dealership's markup if possible.

Denso (OEM) is the only way to go. Should be able to find in the $50 to $60 range.

^ Ditto - Amazon.

Thanks for all the replies. I think it is counterfeited ones ver close to originals.

Once damaged you can see small breaks on top of the coil. See pic.
The Denso came in " Toyota box" with tbe part # through a Top rated e bay seller. See pic
I am retruning 4 unused and pushing for the refund of 2.

Will the Amazon coil last or short lived ?

I have 40k and 20k+ on the Amazon Denso units I bought and haven't had an issue. I honestly don't know if the ones in my truck have ever been replaced (230k miles on my truck now) so like I said I just keep an extra in my truck just in case I have an issue so I can change it out when needed.

I don't recall ever receiving a box with Toyota and Lexus printed on it. But then I get 90% of my parts from my local Toyota Dealer.

Did the ones you received look just like what's pictured with Denso, Toyota and part number on it/them?
Is the damaged top, one of the new ones that went bad?

You've bought 3 bad coils @ $30 each. At this point you could have bought oem. Personally If you can get amazon for $60 or Toyota for $80, I would go straight to the dealer. At least you know it's an oem part and you'll have warrenty on the part if it fails. Otherwise you risk buying another junk part.

He has actually bought 1 bad coil.

Also, good time to change plugs while you are in there. Cheap and easy to do plus eliminates any problems they might be causing in conjunction.

According to his description. This is the 3rd time cyl 6 has failed, so he's has bought 2 coils for that cylinder, and now needs a 3rd. Personally I would be staying away from any aftermarket product at that point. Just not worth the risk of a remote break down if you're only replacing the one coil. I'm betting the truck did over 200k on those original coils, so even at $100/coil, that's still pretty good value. I get that the aftermarket ones will do the trick but how long will they last? The fact that they are marked Denso doesn't really count if there are a bunch of knock-offs floating around.

Of course in the end of the day, a proper diagnosis matters more than a quality part. He may have a fouled spark plug and has been replacing perfectly good coils.
