Does anyone have any suggestions for tools to remove this tension nut? Have tried screwdriver and hammer clockwise and anti clockwise.

The dent in the nut that pushes into the housing is called a "peen". you need to get a punch or chisel in that slot to make the nut round again before it will spin.

Newb question here: if that nut isn't removed for a rebuild, what will be the consequence? Are there O rings behind there that are not visible?

Rebuild going on. Seals and other rings behind it
Gotcha. I've been staring at my rebuild seal kit for the last 2 and 1/2 years 😁

Apologies, is hould.have mentioned we got the die grinder out.
Well, then I am all out of ideas. Good luck. Maybe because of the reverse rotation in the southern hemisphere, lol?
