Mine is on the fritz and debating pulling it out as it is ripped in a few spots where the fasteners go. What are the downsides to removing it? Anyone have luck with aftermarket options?

My clearcoat started to deteriorate 6mo after removal. Coincidence? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I only pulled it because LS intake manifold needed just a smidge more clearance.

Do we know the part number for the hood mat? I have one that's coming apart and would love to have it replaced. While I'm in there I'm going to rebond the supports to the hood to stop the highway ripple.. lol

Ditto on picking the factory hood insulation pad up yourself at a dealer, they are not wrapped very well as they come from Toyota, just one large flat piece of cardboard folded on one side, maybe 4'x5', open on three sides, held shut by clear tape. If you wanted it shipped the packing and shipping could cost more than the pad itself. On some web sites you'll see " Not for Sale" for that part. It is, you just have to call your dealer, pay for it, and pick it up, they won't ship it for obvious reasons.

Main drawbacks to the original pad is that it is easily damaged, absorbs oil like a sponge, and can't be cleaned without damaging it further.

Would be interesting to know if the aftermarket options are "better".

Don’t NOT replace it. Unless you don’t like your hood paint. OEM is still available but pick it up from the dealer, don’t have it delivered. Dynamat and others make a hood liner as well.

The paint thing is a myth. Overseas trucks didn’t have them and mine hasn’t had one for about 150k miles now.

So which one is it? I've seen a ton of posts about people taking them off to reduce under hood temps. Mine was in bad shape and I ripped it out 6 months ago. If the 80 overseas doesn't have it, why does the 80 in the USA peel paint?

It’s simple. Because I ate a burger for dinner, there is no hunger.

And where did the heat go?

Isn’t your truck white?

White = no clear coat

Im curious if anyone has done any test comparing OEM to dynamat/carbuilders/secondskin etc and have found out if it does a better job isolating heat or reducing sound.

All I know is my hood was completely fine. Liner was removed. Within 6mo clearcoat began to get cloudy. From that time on there has been exhaust heat on both sides of the engine bay though.

Could totally be a coincidence also.
