Hi people, I hope I'm in the right forum for this question: I'm about to buy a 1962 FJ40 and plan to transport it from GA to NJ. My intention is to use it as a recreational vehicle, weekends, some off road if it proves to tolerate it, maybe a visit to the family and just hang out to show off; but clearly, not everyday use.
Can you guys illustrate me on the pros and limitations of getting a historical license plate? Here in NJ the code states "They must be owned as a collector's item and only used for exhibition and educational purposes by the owner.", which is not my intention, but on the other hand, my insurance broker tells me premium will be much higher if registered as a regular car.
Besides, if I am not mistaken, being this 62 FJ40 imported pre-EPA (1967) doesn't need to comply with emissions requirements.
Please enlighten me!

this would be better covered in the clubhouse section that has nj members...that would be the ny-gotham city club.
to many ins and outs per state. depends how much of a dick the local pd is/wants to be.
here in pa i have my 40 registered as an antique with a vintage registration add on....what's that mean?
i'm running an original, previously issued, expired license plate that is correct for the era....with a 75 registration sticker.
no annual safety inspection....i also have a repo 75 inspection sticker on it
no annual emissions checks
permanent registration, had a one time, at application fee...no yearly renewal.
with the vintage registration...no special plate.....antiques and classics get special plates that stand out from the rest.
by law i'm not supposed to drive it more than one day a week as "regular" transportation......the local pds pay me no mind.....and i have put it to the test already.

Thanks Brian, I re-posted it on the NY clubhouse section.

Good answers Brian. Ready to face this same dilemma on my '78 here in Prescott area Arizona

Most states "antique" or "classic" designations have mileage restrictions that are too severe for me; I like to drive mine.

I'd like to get an antique IH8MUD plate

and that is why this question is a local question.
in Pa there are no mileage checks. i believe at one time the process to get antique or classic registrations was much more stringent and there were mileage restrictions that were checked upon annually.
