little more done. column in drill holes column out make holes bigger, column in test fit, column out enlarges some holes etc etc etc. you get the picture. finally it’s mounted. i need to replace a few bracket bolts with grade 8 ( i don’t have the right size on hand). i also got the pump mounted. the bracket i got required a little shimming to fit properly 🧐. not sure why but a few washers in the correct place and the pulley lines up perfectly. lastly i tried to put the hose on i had made. it is m16 both ends. unfortunately 5/8 is technically 15.875mm and many have said it’ll work mine didnt. it stripped the threads on the hose so ill have to take it back and have a new nut on. i’ll ask them to use the proper 5/8 to have it mate properly. lastly i dont have the right length belt for my pump so ill pick one of those up too hopefully tomorrow. then i hope it’ll all go together like i’ve planned, ill clean up wires and put the fender back on!

i was at toyota fest today at my local dealer! it got me inspired. some pretty sweet cruisers and other toyotas out there. one event was the car crush that a few really built 4x4s went over. then this guy went and did it!! it was so sweet

everything is buttoned up tonight. the 5/8 off the back of the pump and m16 on the box works perfectly. it’s the right way to go!!

the only think i’m stuck on is i can’t find my pump cap!! illl have to get one tomorrow.

i’ve bled it as best as i can for now borrowing a cap from my chevelle. it doesn’t feel like one finger steering but the bushing on my steering shaft is snug so that may free up as it wears in. i look forward to trying it out for real!!
 
I’ve spent over an hour reading the progress you're making over 4 years…doesn’t seem fair…I did enjoy the read and great photos. You can see the smiles on the kids with their ice cream cones…that’s equally impressive inspiration to continue. Looking forward to your completion, good luck
 
thanks. i dont know this one will ever get to completion as my only goal it to have it running and driving safely. i have another 40 that is truely my baby and i cant wait to get working on that one again. this one is a fun project to work on with my kids and keep me driving while my big project drags on and on and on!!
 
bought an $11 cap and took it for its first drive. holy cow i almost laughed when i went to turn around!! it works so well. this is the single best mod ive done to tighten up my steering so red doesn’t want to kill me anymore. springs bushings and tires all made a difference for sure but the old steering box was so worn!! this is amazing and makes it so fun to drive. it’ll also be easier on my arms as now turning my 33s on pavement is crazy easy!! i love it!

they are 1 inch spacers i believe. the narrowest i could get to burry the wheel studs.

anyway i went to pull a diff out of my extra axle and found this.

crap. i don’t want an aussie locker in this truck. this one came out of my blue 40 apparently. i drove it with this locker and found it very twitchy in the winter. i want red for my son to learn to drive and don’t want the extra nuances of a locker for him

so now i have to pull a diff out of my blue 40 project as i have 2 diffs with arbs ready for it. i just want to install them once to protect the air lines. i still have some assembly/disassembly steps to do there. it’s amazing how a simple project can become much bigger than originally planned. oh well. buckle up

This would probably be the easiest solution if you have the parts.
 
i haven’t really thought about it yet but you’ll be top of my list if i decide to let it go!

i do have all the parts so maybe i’ll try to just use this one. just gotta figure out how to get that locker out. it’s been 12 years since i put it in!!

it was way easier to remove than i thought. it was actually harder to get the spider gears lined up with the cross post!

just pop out the springs, slide the pins out and the assembly just slides out. (don’t forget to slide the axles out of the side gears or they won’t come out)

anyway i have an open diff again! looks like my carrier was damaged at some point and welded. i’m not wheeling this one hard so i’ll run with it. if it explodes i have two more good diffs just hanging around 🤣

i got a new paper gasket today so im ready to go with the swap. i was going to buy a tube if toyota fipg as the stuff is awesome but it went up in price from $25 a tube to $38. that’s almost double what the paper gasket cost. i’ll just use cheaper permatex for the cover.

well trying to be cheap has once again delayed me. i should have just bought new axle seals but when i took the axle out sure enough there’s oil all over the brakes. so now ive ordered new seals which will come tuesday next week. i was hoping to have the diff swapped in a morning but nope!

old one is out and new one is in. i just can’t install axles yet

and when chunks of metal come out with the oil you know something inside is not right

well crap!! i’ve been driving two wheel drive since swapping in the new diff. it seems like im moving faster than everyone around me. hmmmm🧐. now that’s it’s snowed i put it in 4x4 and something sure doesn’t feel right. kind of catches on hard surface and the front end feels like it’s being pushed all over the place and not actually gripping when in the deep snow. quickly it came to mind i don’t have the right gear ratio in there so of course i’ve had to drive in 2wd again which sucks in the snow we’ve just had!! i just confirmed it. i spun my rear wheel twice and the drive shaft spins 3.7ish times. 💩. now i gotta regear 💰. i have a set of 4.11 used ring and pinion but its old and a little worn. the one that came out of this truck looks like it was sitting in water for a while. it’s super pitted! so guess i gotta pony up 🤨

this is the other gear set i have (it of course has fine splines on the pinion where the old one is coarse so if i was to use it i’d have to get a new pinion flange too)

why would i have had 3.70 gears in my 1977 fj40? who knows. 🤷‍♂️

good used one will be about $500cad. parts would be about $700 plus another $6-700 labour to build it. i dont have the tools or expertise to save the labour cost doing it myself. as much as id love to learn thats just not in the cards right now.
 
It's usually cheaper to find a used 3.70:1 3rd member already assembled. Your lucky you didn't break anything engaging 4wd with two different gear ratios.
