right!! and yeah i realized it wasn’t right pretty quick. 4.11 should have been in my 77 fj40 as far as i understand. it’s surprising that this was a 3.70. my 72 that i swapped it into has 4.11 so i want to keep those. it feels sluggish with the 3.70. i may have a lead on a good used 4.11

so i’ve lost my rear signal lights. the front work properly and the dash indicators work. my driving and brake lights work i’ve chased the wires and they all seem to work. there are two connectors on the firewall that have these wires in them. i’ve taken them apart and cleaned all the corrosion out. any other places that are common for this issue to occur i should be looking? i can’t find the break in the circuit. i’ve also just noticed my rear left signal works only when the brake is on. the right brake light doesn’t work nor does the signal. i wonder if they were wired wrong 🤷‍♂️

by the way i don’t have oem rear lights. i have these

there’s two wires to these lights. i assumed one was for running and the other was for signal/brake.

When weird things happen it's usually a ground. Your probably correct on the 2 wires. The light needs a good ground. Do the wires have voltage?

they work fine for running lights so i assume they have a good ground

i played with the harness under the dash that connected the steering column to the main harness. with wiggling it a bit i had people left side brake and signal function though intermittent. i also had proper right side brake at one point. never got the right signal to work though. (swapped bulbs and the bulbs are fine). but at least i think i’ve found the place to start checking wires and cleaning the connectors! maybe ill get this sorted tonight afterall!!

Have you tried separating and re-seating all the connectors?
If wiggling it about gets it working then it's usually either corrosion at a connector joint, or where the wires are crimped into the contacts.
Have a closer look at the steering wheel connectors

The turn signal switch is pretty primitive with its contacts and operation. I use a test light to find where there is power or not throughout the circuits.

I have a 4.11 ring and pinion too, that you could have for the cost of shipping. They’re out of my ‘72. The ring has a couple of nicks. Haven’t taken a close look at the pinion. Message me if interested and I’ll send you some pics. I’m in Alberta so shipping shouldn’t be too crazy.

thanks guys. shipping from oklahoma is probably not cost effective but i appreciate the offer. i have a 4:11 ring gear set but dont have the ability to set it up. i’d like to just get a third already set up to drop in.

as far as the lights i did separate and clean the connectors. it didnt fix the issue in the end. i’ll have to dig into that connector and wires a little more as i think thats the “area” of the harness thats giving me troubles. i just need time!! it’s such a premium these days!! i also installed my horn relay from cityracer and now it makes some noise but doesn’t function right i hear the relay click but no noise. as i let the horn button go i get a real brief honk. not enough to really warn anyone but noise!! so thats another wiring gremlin to chase. 🤷‍♂️

Shipping can be a real impediment to purchase.. my last set of additions to my FJ40 added well over $1100.00 to the money spent in addition to the actual parts. Especially that 75% of them were on the left coast. I want those parabolic springs. They’re not local either

shipping across the border also adds extra expense too. they all want to charge their brokerage fee which adds another 12% or whatever it is!! i’ve literally paid shipping costs equal to the item i purchased because of all the little fees that add up as it travels. i only went through with it because it was something i needed that wasn’t available here.

new (good used actually) diff purchased from 4wheel auto in edmonton. they’ve checked backlash and cleaned it all up. i’ll pick it up at christmas when im out there.

working on my steering wheel while watching hockey! good saturday afternoon!! this was a cheap wrap and i was very worried it was the wrong size as it felt too small but it’s actually fairly stretchy and is a perfect fit.
did a little epoxy fix. more to come on the hub.

i did notice that when i hit my horn it gives a little beep and then stops but my 4 ways flash too. wth?

well that took about 2.5 hours and a couple small thread cuts but i’m really happy. i was so tired of the rough cracked wheel that the plastic is breaking down on. it’d leave black on my hands in the hot weather. this will be way more comfortable. it’s a bit of lipstick💄 on a pig🐷 as red isn’t a fancy vehicle but what ever. it’ll make it that much more pleasurable to drive!!

i’ll finish filling and sanding the cracks another time. i need to drive again tomorrow!

@franklin40 That is the correct fitting steering wheel cover…. @Aloha Jen sent me the size and it fits very well. The initial order I place with Amazon was 15” sent that one back
