I'm needing a new clutch for my 1970 40 series with a SBC 350, stock tranny 3-speed. I was just curious as to what people with a similiar setup recommended. I appreciate the input.

Alex, this hasn't been discussed 1,000 times. AA and Downey manufacture a special clutch that requires less travel, so that it can work with your Toyota hydralics. Your Toyota hydralics does not have enough travel built-in to fully disengage a standard Chevy clutch. Some on this forum believe they CAN use a stock Chevy clutch---good for them. Some suggest a LUK clutch, my guess is because it is the cheapest thing on the planet.

if you look on AA's page's for either of the chevy v8 conversion kits 3spd or 4spd . they offer either the centerforce low profile ,or the LUK low profile . take your pic either one should work

712532 | Engine & Transmission Conversion Adapters - Advance Adapters

see link scroll to the bottom of the page for low pro LUK. sold by AA for
chevy V8 conversions

that pic for the Luk low profile is wrong that is not a low profile preasure plate.

Luk good clutches

I've Run a "Standard 11" low diaphragm type chev Clutch" in my +/- 300 hp 350 TLC for 13 years now. Luk are good clutches and mine has worked well in front of my 4 speed TLC box. I don't have any first hand knowledge with 3 speed.

I used a 1970s type Luk Clutch and Pressure plate. It looks very similar to the Original TLC one.

In 1979, I did the engine swap in my 1974 FJ40. I used the AA weld in kit forthe three speed transmission. Their literature at the time recommended using a Borg and Beck style three finger plessure plate.
Now,30 years later, i am just replacing that clutchwith another of the same style. I have never had a problem with the Toyota hydraulics operating the clutvh. and this is after about 75000 miles on the unit.

I am running the center force clutch in my 40 with a sbc and have no problems at all. contact is low on the pedal but it is fully disengaged when depressed. No slippage on the trail at all or in a low power crawl. I am running the 4 speed trans and a 3 speed transfer.

YA! I've been running my chevy low pro preasure plate for around 15 years never had a problem with the stock toyota hydraulics ,In Canada mine is made by FENCO , thought i would add my pic of the low pro to this thread also . looks different than the LUK one dargreg posted above

looks like many of us have found an off-the-shelf solution that has worked for many people/miles/years. Big Jim, how do you respond to this? Kinda pokes a hole in your whole platform, doesn't it?

i used a stock chevy clutch from and 85 2 wheel chevy drive truck .in 85 chevy trucks were hydraulic so their hasnt been any problems for me .it was the 11 " pressure plate and stock toyota disc .good luck
