Damn you Mot if they get much cheaper I want my Saturdays back.. :D

Try me! ;)

How much is enough? :D

But don't you feel good in knowing that you've helped out millions of current and future 80 owners with their 2nd row reclining needs. :D

:flipoff2:

This is all looking great, But I agree on it being in the FAQ part, If you can cut through all the chit chat....;) once I have a sec to read through ALL the info, I will decide weather I wanna just buy the good's or "make it so" * best Picard imp. I could come up with. :)
Good stuff

Mot, hope you can move those 10 sets. I'm going to take a look at it this afternoon I think. It is rather cold outside and I'm not sure I want to suffer through the whole process but maybe just take a peek to see what's going on.

i never looked at the link mot posted but did i hear mention of sliding seat adjustment too? I don't even want to think about that yet, but i might be interested in buying something along that line...sounds like LX wants the slide option for cleaning purposes too :flipoff2:

Rick,

You and me both. :D

Well, if I can't and get desperate, I might either venture out to the e-bay rounte and prey on unsuspecting 80/450 owners who do not know MUD and my evil dealings. :D ... or just get rid of them for cost to you losers! :flipoff2:

I'm not sure if I was the one who posted that link posted by a member formerly known as Endless. :D

If it's the same kit I am thinking of (full-flat), then I believe as a part of the kit, the 2nd row slids (forward?) a little in order for the 2nd row seatback to recline, fully flat/flush with the butt part of the 3rd row. But the shop wants something north of $1k for the kit. Not worth it to me in my opinion. :)

Just got in from looking at the hinges. I ground off the pins on the 2nd row seats and called it good. Man that looks like a lot of work for somebody elses comfort. I figure if I'm riding back there it's because I'm injured or sleepy, either way the full recline is where I would want it.

thanks for the reply mot 1k is a little pricy

and landtank, the job is not too PITA if you don't mind being covered in metal filings from those crazy thick headed rivets :flipoff2:

I am still picking metal out of my hair...need one of those old metal combs and magnetize it...

way cool mod, hate to bring up an old thread, but it can't hurt others to see it either. And I want to be able to find it when I get back home :D

Well,

I didn't see a lot of folks doing this, but remembered seeing it awhile back. I put Mots hinges in my previous 80 and now that this 80 is back on DD duty, the lack of reclining seats was irritating me. I was able to pick up a set of third row seats from Schmukster up in PA--I just had him send me the hinges and can the seat cushions. This saved me the high cost of shipping the things, he got paid, and I got the parts I needed. If one keeps an eye on the classifieds you can pick up a set for under 100 bucks pretty often.

I wanted to keep the third row reclining hinges working because two of the kiddos ride back there, so doing the gear swap from my hinges was not an option.

On to the pics. Nakmans instructions were spot on, but I made one modification. After drilling one of the hinges and then looking at the strength of the bolts in a side impact situation, I decided to weld new "heads" on the rivets that I had ground off. It may not be much stronger, but it won't come loose and it makes me feel better. Also, this is a pretty easy job if you have a couple hours to fiddle with it and have the extra set of hinges on hand.... I also put a coupe coats of rustoleum on the welded spots--probably no risk of rust inside the car, but oh well....

Thanks to Nakman for doing the legwork on this.

Hey, Dan!

Just sold my last pair not too long ago!

Good thing my 80 has them in place already as I'm not tech savvy enough to mod the hinges or even replace them!

Hope all is well with you and the loved ones, especially Liz. ;)

Things are good. This really isn't that hard, just takes a little grinding....

Are you getting any more in?

I wondered about taking the gear down to a machine shop and seeing how much it would be to make a few sets. The biggest problem with your sets is the price, and the biggest problem for Nakman's method is gear availability..... Seems like if you could get a relatively inexpensive gear made, it would solve both problems. [kicking myself for not thinking of this BEFORE welding everything together]

Dan,

I don't have any plans of getting any more of them in especially now that I'm in the States.

Yeah, if you can get it done cheaper.... this is one mod that your backseat passengers would thank you for!

Ok, got to work on the passenger seat today and you dont have to swap the gear. I removed the parts as shown but I did not bother removing the gear from the bracket arm, I just broke out the grinder with a cutting wheel and added more notches to the existing gear all the way to the stop. Put everything back together and it works great. Sorry I didnt take pics, the only thing that gave me grief was the rivets installed are different sizes as they go through the multiple pieces so you will need to scratch up a bushing to press in where you are replacing rivets with bolts in the different areas as needed.

...I just broke out the grinder with a cutting wheel and added more notches to the existing gear all the way to the stop.

Thanks for doing that, I was thinking that would be easier, but glad to know someone has done it that way. It's not like it needs a precision cut or anything.

I would say that it does need a precision cut. In an accident, you don't want your seat backs flopping all around--the teeth need to mesh well. I thought about this as well, but decided it would be easier and safer to swap the gears.

After the install I snatched on the seat back and forth just to test and it is solid. It did take some finess with the grinder but after a few minutes it was right. I will post pics when I do the drivers side. Before I disassembled my 3rd row I thought this was worth a try. It turned out nice....

Doing this project right now... Picked up an extra set of 3rd row for 50bucks... dug in before I found these posts...LOL but im on the right track!!! I too think I want to get someone to weld up the rivets again for me, instead of drilling and tapping. I feel that those rivets are fairly soft. I question how well the tap would hold over time.

How are everyone's holding up?
